or is there any questions you want me to ask

might ask walker what he found so funny about letting a goal in all the time, always remember him just sitting there smiling if we conceded

Those two players some up nicely the lack of quality we have had over the last 20 years and should really put in to perspective just how much talent we have at our disposal now.

My thoughts exactly, yeah sure it is for charity, I'm gonna concentrate more on the 91 part of their careers lol

I always liked David Howells, he gave 100%, it's just that it didn't normally amount to much.
I did see him make Vinnie Jones bottle itwhich was some sort of achievement.

Walker was a talented but flawed goalkeeper. He just lost concentration. In terms of pure ability I thought he was superb, but he made too many silly errors. That said, if people are going to defend Gomes because of the defence he's had in front of him, Walker had to put up with far worse barring Judas of course.

Howells was a poor player but he was never guilty of a lack of effort and, while I have no affinity with him, he was a youth product he played a lot of games for us. That's something I wish we could manage in modern times.

The night will certainly be worthwhile just for the sake of hearing a bit about the Sugar years from players who lived it. It might not have been a glorious time, but it still shaped us a lot.

Think people are maybe a bit hard on Howells - remember he was a key member of 1991 cup winning side, as well as the guy Gerry Francis used to plug the hole in the sinking ship when he took over from Ardiles (much like Palacios did for us more recently). He played nearly 300 games for us over 13 seasons.

I've met him a few times over the years and he's a really nice guy too.

Howells was a decent enough player. He was Tottenham through and through. He always adapted for the team and would play in any position asked of him with no fuss.

His wife battled with cancer and I do believe his father died a day before a game and he had no time off.

He would also never give up, always trying and wanting the ball when others heads would drop.

I would liken him to Jamie O'hara in modern football.

I remember Howells shaving his head after his wife lost her hair as a result of chemotherapy. Always thought that was a really decent gesture and gave an insight to his attitude, as a footballer I always thought he was a great example of a good honest pro. Limited ability wise, but you could never question his commitment.

Howells always tried I liked that a lot. Him and Sedgley got under the skin of Keane in the FA cup final 91 quite a bit too.

I remember when Southampton beat Arsenal 1-0 and Howells got the winner, he dedicated the goal to Spurs fans. He was a nice guy who had some rough times losing members of the family. I remember him scoring against West Ham almost passing it in the goal from 25 yards, great goal

As for Walker he was frustrating. One week you'd turn up to Spurs and fans would say he's good enough to replace Seaman, the next week they would call him rubbish and he's more interested in playing with his hair :D

I met Ian Walker before and I have got to say he is a victim of miconception. He really top bloke. He'll probably laugh along with you when you ask that question.

You could ask him about his sight in his left eye though. There was a massive rumour going around that he was only about 50% out of that eye. I never actually asked him, but when you look back over some of the near post goals he conceded on that side, it does make sense!

Maybe ask Walker how he feels seeing Friedel, who is 2 years older than him, still playing for Spurs.

Oh, I'm too late aren't I?

As you were.

I'm going to a dinner evening with Gazza on Thursday, really looking forward to it. Not sure what i'm going to ask him about, probably the 89-90 season and the failure to be selected for the 1998 world cup.

Anybody got any ideas?

Just to say the night was quality and they were both really nice guys especially howells, answered everything you asked. I said to walker bout brad and him being same age ish and he just laughed and said he had to retire due to bad back, so could never make comeback even if he wanted too which he did after the states

asked them both bout the sugar years and howells said it was hard but they tried to distance themselves from it and losing venables was a massive blow and really rocked the squad for years

also said pleat was so knowledgable but so weird and nobody was surprised when it all came out about his extra activities ;)

ive got one with mabbs coming up soon so that will be good and also one for/with dave mckay mid november which i cant wait for
