Who has shone brightest so far?

Some have soared while others have suffered, but which team most caught your eye during the opening instalments of the UEFA Champions League round of 16?

With the UEFA Champions League round of 16 ties now poised at the halfway stage, the tournament contenders have all had a chance to demonstrate their potential.
The first legs smiled on the English sides in particular, with Tottenham Hotspur FC clinching an excellent 1-0 win away against AC Milan and Chelsea FC taking a stranglehold on their tussle with FC København. Arsenal FC fought back to grab a 2-1 advantage against FC Barcelona ahead of the return meeting at the Camp Nou on 8 March and even Manchester United FC, the only Premier League outfit not to prevail, can be pleased with their goalless draw at Olympique de Marseille.
Milan's loss heralded a troubling two weeks for the Italian aspirants, all three of whom suffered damaging home losses, and holders FC Internazionale Milano will need a superb performance at FC Bayern München on 15 March if they are to avoid an early exit to last season's runners-up. As for AS Roma, their 3-2 defeat by FC Shakhtar Donetsk suggested the Ukrainian outfit could continue to prove a handful.
While Barcelona now need a victory to progress, their fellow Liga representatives are better placed but still have work to do. Real Madrid CF avoided a fourth consecutive reverse away against Olympique Lyonnais, but their tie is delicately poised at 1-1, and that is also how things stand between Valencia CF and FC Schalke 04 after the Bundesliga outfit made a solid start to their tie in Spain. All 16 clubs will be hopeful of grabbing a quarter-final berth in the decisive legs, but which team has most caught your eye so far?

Tottenham. They don't have winning history in their back, but they emerged as group winner, and won in away game against Serie A league leader and second-most-titled club in history in Champions League.

As always the Premier League teams are the best since they play in the best league of the world. I see an all english final. Hopefully ManUtd will be one of them.

in the history of Champions League, only once a team that lost at home in the 1st leg still managed to go through.. so Bayern, Spurs, Chelsea and Shakhtar will certainly progressed.... the tie in the balance = Barca v Arsenal, Man United v Marseille, Schalke v Valencia, Lyon v Real = these ties could go either way.... i predict Man United, Schalke will go through... Barca v Arsenal and Lyon v Real are really hard to predict........

Without a doubt. Spurs... they are the underachievers in this foreign league and even though I'm not a hardcore fan and hope that Barca will win, they certainly have what it takes with the quality of players they have. Just wait till Bale Modric and Van der Vaart come back to full form - they're going to slice through the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Definitely Tottenham. I think they are an amazing team that play great football.

Undeniably Tottenham. Unlike the other teams, they don't have experience in the Champions League. To come in and get an away win against a giant team like AC Milan is huge. I was glad my team won but Tottenham impressed me the most.

Tottenham suprised me with a win over AC milan

Arsenal were by far the most outstanding team...coming from a goal down to beat barca is no mean feat. Spurs also had a great result....fighting and grinding out a win against Milan and third on the list is bayern who like spurs got a vital away win at the same stadium against the blue half of milan.

FC Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur FC, Chelsea FC, Manchester United FC, Shakhtar Donetsk, Real Madrid CF, Schalke '04 and Bayern Munchen are going through for me.

The most convincing teams have been Bayern and Shakhtar Donetsk... But you can't write of Real, AC Milan, or Barcelona. Tottenham will struggle against Milan at white hart lane.. Can't see them going through

Torres and Anelka were fantastc on wednesday, but i think shaktar are the team to watch

For the next round of ties i will expect barca and chelsea and bayern and manu and spurs and real and shaktar and schalke to go through to the last eight.

I agree that Tottenham was the biggest surprise. Arsenal played great as well. I'm a ManU fan fan but I say these two clubs played the best so far.

It was an entertaining 1st round!! There were surprises...Spurs beat Milan. Arsenal beat Barca after dominating majority of the 1st half, Shakhtar beat Roma which I found shocking...and the game between Bayern and Inter was very entertaining! These are the teams I predict will go on to the next round...Shalke, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Real Madrid...as for Barca/Arsenal Spurs/Milan and Bayern/Inter it can still go either way so Im not counting out these teams!!

I think Arsenal has been the most impressive after beating Barcelona who has been dominant over everyone for the past 3 years. They came back from a 1-0 deficit so it was very good on their part.

Tottenham have surprised. They are a good footballing side, are entertaining and are lightning quick. Arsenal and Barcelona are the best sides in Europe and their match was an excellent advert for European football. It's just a shame their game came so early and was not the final.

Spurs are the best !! Next leg White Hart Lane with Bale back it should be a great game .

definitely had to say arsenal, shaktar and spurs! shaktar is as much underrated as milan is now overrated that wont take the shine of what tottenham had done, but that plus the fact that italian sides are doing bad shows how great arsenal did overall
Cesc73 - Republic of Ireland - 25/02/2011 16:00

Arsenal surprised me. Not many teams can come back from a goal dows vs Barca. I was disappointed by Real Madrid. I'm happy with Bayern. They beat the Club World Cup and UEFA CL holders! How may teams can do that?! Tottenham was impressive too.

Tottenham Hotspurs is the team that has stood out the most thus far in the tournament. GO SPURS!!!

Football has been really unpredictable this season, especially the Champions League. Only 1 game is already over to me and that is Kobenhavn v Chelsea, I don't see Kobenhavn winning by 2 goals at Chelsea, all the other teams defiantly have a chance. The teams I expect to go through to the next round are Tottenham, Valencia, Shakhtar Donetsk, Barcelona, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Man United, and Bayern.

I think real madried worked very hard to earn that 1-1 draw. They have a better chance to progress into last 8 as we all know what Jose Morinoh is capable of.

1.Arsenal 2.Spurs 3.Bayern and Inter. 4. Barcelona. I dont think anybody could disagree..... no matter what team you support these have played the best so far and seem to have what it takes to reach the final.

Being an Inter fan, It is always harder to win the next season. Ask Barcelona!!! I have to say that Chelsea has been so close & I think with the acquisition of Torres they will be in the Finals & Win it!!!!! Ancelloti's Fourth CL Trophy!!! (Should be five, how did they blow a 3-0 lead to Liverpool!!!!!) FORZA INTER!!!!!!!!

I have been a ManU fan for over 20 years ... but this one MUST go to Tottenham, really exiting football, "easy" wins, first time CL, team effort (albeit a few players shining brighter than others) ... the picture above says it all, that isn't arrogance it's sheer happiness.

I think arsenal was the best by doing the impossible and defeating barcelona and i hope for a second great match

I disagree with the comment for Inter. You can't really shine when you are not successful in the win. Tottenham have really proven themselves. Arsenal had a fantastic turn around against Barca! It's Arsenal for me.

I think Totteham and Chelsea, because they played so comfortably, despite having away games.
luckey_safe - 24/02/2011 16:48

default.gif

I think Barcelona played very well in the first leg and lost narrowly to a lucky Arsenal team. Also, despite Barca playing only three midfielders and Arsenal playing five midfielders in thst game, Barca dominated. It is going to be very difficult for Arsenal to get a goal in at the Nou Camp where as i can see Barca scoring three or four goals. The way Barca dominate the away tie was very impressive and a place in the last eight is in the offing. Bayern Munich was very impressive though Inter Mllan was unlucky not to get a goal in the game and there was a genuine penalty claim not given to the home team. Chelsea also dominated and played very well. Historically, teams from the host countries struggle to reach the final.

You would have to say from rnd 16 1st leg that Tottenham and Shaktar Donestk were the teams that caught the eye. Both teams recording briliant away wins and to be honest I think Tottenham are the team that has shone since the begining, they have been a breath of fresh air.
podgeh064 - 24/02/2011 14:15

I'm not their fan, but the Tottenham have shone the best football so far, especially thanks to G. Bale. Historic debut in CL..

i would say inter even thou they lost they played very well all i saw in the match was left right left right it was the greatest match of r16 1st leg

In the first tie my picks were Luka Modric and Aaron Lennon, creating Crouch's goal. Raul scored a good goal on his return to Spain in the other match that night. Van Persie scored a frankly stunning goal against Barcelona and so did Douglas Costa against Roma. Anelka was great against Copenhagen on a night which Benzema scored on his return to Lyon. Nani was great against Marseille and so was Vidic. Ayew also performed well for Marseille. Robben and Gustavo were great for Bayern.

Great to see so many impartial fans signalling out Tottenham as the team to watch and enjoy. There is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that participating in this season's Champions League has given us in a few months the worldwide exposure we dreamed of and long may it continue. Should we beat AC Milan, which I'm sure we will do, Tottenham will become a household word in footballing terms and should we go on to win the damm thing with our swashbuckling style we'll go down in history.
With Chelsea's win today, albeit undeservedly, we now can't afford to slip up anymore in our league games and the sooner our injured are back, so much the better, as we fight for 3rd or 4th place.
