Tottenham Hotspur have been granted permission this week to build a new six-storey complex of homes and a cinema opposite their stadium. The application for the project was made back in August to Haringey Council by Goodsyard Tottenham Limited, which is part of Spurs' corporate group structure

Upping the area is all good. ??

But: are we a property development company or a football club?

Nothing at all to do with the Footballing side.

But Tottenham Hotspur are a Football & Athletic company above all, and part of that is to operate as a business. There are concerts and NFL events that go on, too. This will no doubt be part of the Northumberland Development that made all the previous possible.

If it was done outside of the THFC umbrella, people would say it's evidence of ENIC syphoning money or something.

It was always an essential part of the stadium development master plan to develop hundreds of flats and plough the profits from selling them into reducing the debt for ther stadium itself. That's what Arsenal did when they redeveloped Highbury. The affordable housing part of the Arsenal development can be seen in Hornsey Street.

THFC managed to avoid providing any affordable housing, because of the dangers to the overall stadium scheme after the financial crash. When the residential/hotel development is finally built, just south of the stadium along Park Lane, which we can call Phase 3 of the master plan, it should generate substantial profits, unless there is a housing price crash between now and then.

As part of the overall political deal, THFC also got involved in the regeneration of the overall neighbourhood, with Haringey Council. THFC has co-sponsored and developed affordable housing projects nearby (e.g., Cannon Rubber), worked on the Love Lane Estate regeneration and the improvements to WHL station. The Goods Yard development is part of that overall involvement in improving the neighbourhood and it also should produce some profits that can be used to reduce the stadium debt.

Trying to create laughs with a witty remark and end up setting a personal record in being quoted on this site ... o_O by serious people patiently explaining the things of the world.

But, on a serious note: big thank you to @sausage and especially @davidmatzdorf for your insight! ??

I do believe that a huge majority of our fans appreciate what Levy and Enic have done for our club when it comes to training facilities, the new stadium, the sound financial running of the club, etc. We were not considered one of the 10 richest/most valuable clubs in the world at the time they took control. And I doubt there are many that are strongly against a long overdue revamp and upgrade of the local area.

And since they took over they have taken the club from being a mid table (and below) club to one who fights for top six and top four places in the league, and constantly gets to semifinals in domestic cups. But that isn´t really all that satisfactory, is it? "Even failure will have in it an echo of glory" ends the famous Bill Nicholson quote. Levy & Enic don´t have this in them - when it comes to the sports and footballing part of this club.

YES! They have already proved to be all about glory and willing to take huge risks and never give up! When it comes to infrastructure. We have a world class training centre, and a world class stadium. And all those years with getting permits and trying to buy up the land around the stadium area, and all those wonderful examples of an eye for details in these projects; it is proof of a stubbornness, tenacity and willingness to go that extra mile to reach the goal that leads to world class.

Then why is it so difficult to do the same for the football team at the very heart of it all?

Daniel Levy is world class in building infrastructure for a sports club. And maybe even a world class neighbourhood upgrader. But he is not world class in building a football squad. But it seems like he thinks he is.

My "witty" remark was just this: an easy to make comment that carries in it the frustration of what I imagine a large amount of Spurs fans can relate to and/or agrees with. We see all the good Levy & Enic do to the club and area. We don´t want him to stop being in charge of things. We just want him to stop being so hands on when it comes to the football. Build the monuments that will outlast you and us - by all means. Your name will be fondly remembered for it. But pretty please; just give someone who knows how to do this a budget and say:

"This is yours - I will watch you closely, and you are not allowed to overspend - but take it, and build us a team to bring home glory."

According to @Trix (I think) in the ITK forum, this is exactly what he has done with Paratici and Conte.
