Just wondering where does Dawson fit in terms of the pace?

It seems to me that if King gets injured we don't have anyone quick at the back?

Why an earth did Capello pick Upson???

i think daws would occupy the 'left back' role in most games. Pity as I think he'd do a better job than both upson and carragher.

On a different note, our world cup 11 would be as follows:

------------gomes-----------

--Benny--Daws--King---Bass--

--Lennon---Palacios---GDS--

-----------Cole------------ (if the rumours turn out to be correct)

-----Crotch----Defoe--------

We didn't really have any other options though. What player would have brought pace to the defence? The other options Lescott and Jagielka aren't quick either.

Although don't Italy have a slow defence? Yet they won the last World Cup.

Who cares Italy won the world cup with arguebly the most immobile defence in the tornement, pace is only usefull for a CB is someone makes a mistake, and if we are clever we can order someone like Johnson and Cole to cut in and aid the defence against the quick strikers

Italy did have a dogged ball winning DM in Gatusso though which we are severely lacking, defence has been surprisingly shaky for England under Capello but hopefully it's ironed out for the WC. If tactics are right then a pairing say of Terry and Daws shouldn't be that bigger deal.

Isn't Upson also supposedly the quickest CB in the Prem?

I agree that he didn't have a great season but Upson played most of the qualifiers and didn't let anyone down so it's fair enough that he's there. Sometimes you just have to pick someone you trust as back-up. Ledley should play with Terry IMO but I'd be equally happy to see Dawson start.

You have seriously undervalued the vision and talent of the Italian defenders. Aside from a fit King I do not think that any of the England CBs would make it into that squad

No I haven't I have Italian blood in me after all

If we don't have enough vision and talent in Defence then we don't deserve to win. No pace can save a lack of vision and talent.

On Materazzi however, he is not a great defender at all. A thug maybe, but not a great defender. No better then Terry, actually worse.

King, Rio and Terry are 3 of the best centre backs in the world. Not to mention Ashley Cole as arguably the best left back.
