Just seen on Skysports, Liverpool are lining up £12million for Gareth Barry.

Not only is he a life long spurs fan, but he is a crackin footballer too! True Midfield General, Captain Material?

I think we should Challenge the offer from Liverpool and Chelsea.

What you reakon?

What I reckon is years ago we could have got him and I was all for it - but guess what a lot of sages on here (and elsewhere) reckoned 'not good enough' not 'top 4 material' 'won't take us up a level' and the normal guff that a lot of people talk when he's not some 'fancy foreigner' they've seen on you tube, fantasy football or read about in the papers

The times I've heard this nonsense about good English players - ditto Crouch, Downing, Bentley, Ashley Young, etc - now I'm not saying we should buy all of them, depends on price, need, availability etc but there's so much snobbery and unrealistic thinking that goes on with so many of the 'experts' on web sites

A player to be worth buying just has to be someone who would help the team, at the right price etc - not 'top 4 material' ' take us up a level' and the rest of the cliches

While I think we're better than Everton, Rovers, Villa etc - some people on here don't, but even I can see that they've all done well by buying not 'top 4 material' 'won't take us up a level' players and I don't even like them :)

so back to Barry, of course we should buy him at the right price etc- but almost certainly we missed the boat years ago

He's like watching football in slow motion.

Battling with Andriy Voronin to be the slowest Premiership player.

He's English so he's bound to be massively over rated.

Would have to pay £15m for him.

We could get Veloso or Kompany for that who are far far better players.

Barry has been shite of late too.

Why would he want to swap Villa for Spurs?

Agreed, SO SLOW.

A few better than average England performances and all of a sudden he is 12mil worth.

No thanks.

Uefa cup? Get away from Martin Oneil? Play in a home ground at capacity more than twice a season? Not having to live in Brum.

The list is endless.

As opposed to being courted (by all accounts) Chelsea and Liverpool, both teams that carry audiences in excess of ours even on a shyte day and can offer Champions League football regularly and most probably double his wages - the list is endless....

He's a sort of Carrick like player who makes up for his lack of pace with some good passing but he's not in the same league as Carrick for me.

I reckon there's better players out there for that sort of money but if not he'd be an excellent purchase.

One we've missed out on though I suspect.

With Gareth Bale at LB and Gareth Barry at LM, our left hand side would be GazzaBazzatastic.

Having said that it doesn't make up for the fact that he would be ridiculously overpriced and we can by much better for much cheaper overseas. Decent player but no thanks.

when o'neil took over, barry nearly left, it seems he isnt any happier.

He is a spurs fan so potentially that MAY be the bait for him if we did. End of the day if we matched the £12million bid, what is more to him, CL footie? or Playing for his Spurs?

Who said you have to be quick to be a quality midfielder anyway? Scholes is similar to Barry, and he wasnt exactly the fastest player around at his prime either.

Fact is, it would be a quality addition, and atleast he has conistancy on his side!

Barry n Ronaldinhio :)

Would love to have him at Spurs. Met him after a game at Villa Park about four or five years ago, we'd lost 1-0, asked for his autograph etc and just said "I know you're a Spurs fan. Please sign for us". I was about 11 or 12 at the time haha.

Barry is more versatile than Carrick - sorry to disappoint the faithful but IMO a bit over rated (is Carrick).

Barry has a better goal scoring and assist record too- would it be a good purchase? = yes! he also supports Spurs.

Can't believe people r still going on about how great Carrick was in a spurs shirt...and not a word said about Edger Davids who was part of that midfield glue 2-3 seasons back, £18.6M (yes please)

DC Boy was talking about how we were after him a few years ago which I do recall but wasn't he playing left midfield? Would be a good signing but it depends how desperate we are to get him.

Will agree with GavSpur and try and get Alonso if he goes to Liverpool, although im pretty sure he would go to Barca

No don't want him - decent player in an English sort of way but not great. Please lets not add to the list of mediocre british players that we already have!
We really need a lot better and we need to look abroad! For the kind of money Villa will want - we could easily get 2-3 players of better ability!
