What exactly are the arguments against signing Ross Barkley? He isn't being signed necessarily to be an immediate starter. He is still young at 23 and has hit a wall in his development at Everton. He has room for improvement and our manager has proven to be the sort to be able to take players in those exact situations and push them forward. He is very good right now even though he hasn't continued the rapid improvements that he made at a younger age.

He is a top 5 creator from midfield in the Premier League despite being in and out of the squad. He can play in an advanced role right behind a striker or in a deeper role. He is strong on the ball and can create from dribbling or passing (much like Mousa Dembele). I haven't seen his work rate questioned anywhere-- but I could be mistaken there. Best case scenario, in a year or two, he has forced his way into the starting XI and we have yet another top notch English talent. The competition will be good for him and he's a top 6 starting quality player that we are signing without banking on him being a savior. He is the exact sort of player that teams who compete in multiple tournaments successfully have and would be a very strong indication of the progress we're making in building a squad to compete with the top across England and Europe. For between 20m and 30m, what is the issue?

£20-30m and he isn't been signed as an immediate starter? We're told it's a squad game and I think he would be as much an integral part of the squad as most others. Others thought Victor was merely squad and he's played nearly every game.

Of course I understand and agree with your general comments. If he does indeed improve by 20% than what a player we'll have.

It isn't a squad game for Pochettino, though. He has consistently during all seasons in PL picked a narrow selection of trusted players as often as possible. What we need are not "rotation quality", but more players Pochettino will actually trust to keep in the inner circle.

Barkley far exceeds "rotation quality"..that was my point. He can fit and expand the inner circle.

Expanding the numbers of those he trusts is the priority I would have thought for this summer. If not he will just focus on the PL again and basically ignore the other competitions.

Surely we do need a strong squad to be able to compete in all competitions. Barclay could be a player who could step up and be a great aquisition.

This transfer and the fans reaction reminds me of the Toby and Victor signings.

So I'm on board
Nothing like the two transfers you mentioned. These two went over the line unchallenged.. Barkley transfer won't be anywhere as easy as this. First, there will be haggling over the fee, then there will be City, Chelsea, United all wishing to collect someone to stop us having him, and thirdly, there is always the possibility Everton make a stellar offer for him to stay.

Of course we need a strong squad, but we shouldn't just support filling up the squad because "it is a squad game these days". To Pochettino, it isn't "just a squad game". It's a trust game, in which you use the trusted ones whenever possible.
As for Barkely, I appreciate you thinking so, and I can see why, but he has never been a player I've looked at and though "we need him at Spurs".

Barkley has the potential to rotate with Eriksen but to play both of them in our current system would be to the detriment of the team as he lacks the work rate and athleticism of Alli, Son and Lamela.

He's better than those on the outskirts of his 'inner circle' yet still earn a place on the bench and get game time. Barkley will have a bigger impact on our season than Sissoko and GKN have so therefore we'll be stronger.

There's definitely a place in the squad for him but it depends how Poch plans on utilising him. He's at his best when he plays behind Lukaku but Koeman keeps shoving him out wide and he disappears... a bit like AVB did with Sig.

Barkley hasn't really developed since he was 20, but he was bloody good already at 20 and I think he has a lot more potential to realize in him yet. I just see what Poch has done with Wanyama. I was wholly unimpressed with the signing of Wanyama as I didn't see him as an upgrade on Dier. Boy was I wrong, Wanyama is twice the player he was before. He's pretty much become a box-to-box beast in the second half of the season.

If Poch can do the same with Barkley we will have a fantastic player. Ross has great technique, good shot, decent pass and i s extremely strong. He does lack some composure and overall footballing intelligence in certain situations but that will come with age and experience.

In honesty, neither Sissoko nor N'Koudou represents a benchmark for future signings. "He is better than Sissoko". Yeah, well, so are you and I.

He has great talent but doesnt have the brain to match. That's his problem and that's why he has completely stagnated and even fallen back some. You cant teach brains. Barkley holds on to the ball wayyy too long and constantly makes the wrong decisions. If people on here actually watched him play in matches and didnt just see MOTD and squawka stats, im sure you'd see a vastly different majority opinion of him on SC.

Football is a squad game but Pochettino prefers a smaller squad. So you have to perform up to par and earn Poch's trust. Barkley hasnt performed up to par since he first broke through like 3 or 4 seasons ago. That's too long for it to only be a management issue. He's been found out. Poch can teach him to make the necessary adjustments and improve all he wants but you dont think his other managers sere doing the same? At some point, its not the quality of the managers but the player. Barkley simply does not have it in him.

People had similar complaints about this potential signing as they did with Dembele's performances a couple years ago. Dembele 'held on to the ball too long' and 'slowed our play', 'couldn't pick a pass', etc etc. And so many wanted him gone during late AVB, dimmy, and early Poch. Now I always defended the Moose and saw his quality but I did understand to some degree people's complaints. Nowadays how safe do you feel in a big game when Mousa is in the XI?

Now I am not equating the two just utilizing a convenient means of comparison. Barkley has not remotely demonstrated the 'danger recognition' that Mousa inherently has. But he is tenacious, if somewhat & sometimes rash. But I think his potential versatility can make him the 'Dier' of our offense as he could cover CM, AM, and SS positions that no one else in our team can.

As far as athleticism I think Barkley has it in abundance. Actually better than anyone in our team other than N'koudou, Winks, or Danny. That is overall athleticism; cutting, stopping, turning, accelerating, balance, etc. And he can do it while carrying the ball. As far as work rate and conditioning is concerned none of our players had it before Poch so presumably his application and stamina can improve as well.

If it wasn't clear before I am all for this xfer but I don't feel he will have an instant impact like Wanyama. His transition will be much like Mousa's in that you are taking a natural talent and honing his skills within a structured team, ie teach him how to play the game the Poch way.
