Contrary to the narrative that football started in 1992 he’s still the all time highest top flight scorer in English football

Greavesie's all time record of 357 top flight goals has stood for over 50 years. Shearer has come closest in that time with 283. It's likely that Jimmy's record will still stand in another 50 years.

A mark that Ronaldo and Messi only went past his league record in last couple years. Only they have scored more European top flight league goals in major leagues.

Remember when they finally honoured him, they had Mike England ,one of his son's and a couple of his grandchildren on BBC breakfast and the grandkids spoke so wonderfully and naturally about their Grandad, remember thinking another wonderful legacy for you Jimmy, your family.

Everyone wants records to be broken. I hope he keeps this one forever. Rest in peace.

My Dad took me to my first ever Spurs game in which the great, unequalled Jimmy scored four, against Liverpool.

My dad died a couple of weeks ago.

What a sad time this is, but so , so many good memories to live with.

Thank you Jimmy.

I’m a spurs fan because of him. My Dad loved him. I grew up on the stories. A true great of the game. Emotional news for me, they’re together now. He should be remembered fondly and I hope his name is cheered and celebrated today.

The word 'legend' was invented for people like him. One of the all time greats. RIP, Jimmy.

RIP I’m too young to have seen him played or known him in his TV heyday. But I did chase him round the local village hall at one of his granddaughters birthday and call him a big fat sausage. Rest in peace to the King

Put some music on, first up came Whiter Shade of Pale
Seemed kind of appropriate, got my Spurs scarf out, started swaying with it terrace style, singing along with a tear in my eye.
It's gonna be that kind of day...
