If I were a comms person, which I am, working at PGMOL, which I'm obviously not, I'd draft a letter that was posted on social media and to every club and every media outlet after every round of fixtures that said something like this with regards to dissent.

Before the start of the 2023/24 season our officials held meetings with all 20 clubs in the Premier League, including playing and managerial staff, and explained the changes to rules and practices that would be enforced in the upcoming season.

One of the main focuses of our discussions was on the subject of dissent. Our officials made it very clear that incidents like crowding round officials, disrespecting decisions and displays of anger about decisions would be punished by bookings. The players and managers have thus far failed to take heed of this practice and it is regrettable that so many bookings and, ultimately, sendings off continue to be given for dissent in every gameweek.

Our referees have the utmost respect for tensions running high in a highly competitive environment, and there is no greater competitive environment than the Premier League. Nevertheless, the PGMOL will not accept such blatant disrespect towards our referees that has become increasingly common and shows no signs of abating, right down to grassroots levels.

Therefore, we will continue to punish dissent in the same manner as has been done so far this season, and we call on the managers and players to remember this the next time they take the field, in order to maintain a good contest with an emphasis on good sportsmanship.

I wrote this in a couple of minutes, it's really not that bloody hard.
I'd love to see this, but sadly it won't happen.

The idea that footballers are children who are unable to control themselves is just pitiful. Explain the rules, explain the consequences and let them get on with it.

I still think two rugby tweaks would fix a lot of the issues we're seeing...

One would be the sin bin with the potential to up the decision to red during the review.

The other would be the open discussion and transparency of communication they have. You still don't always agree with the decision but you understand how they got there and, if it's a complicated call, why it's taking so long.

And that's before we get to captains being the only people who can approach the ref etc...

VAR/Officiating issues are easy to fix - in theory:

1. Change off-side law to require attacker to be fully behind (closer to goal) 2nd defender - it won't be enough to be a toe offside.
2. Use the AI technology from FIFA/UEFA - and make an instantaneous call. You will still have some tight decisions, but now, everyone will see that the attacker had an advantage, and the complaints will be minimal.
3. Officials on the field make the calls. VAR reviews for clear and obvious errors - which means, if it's not clear and obvious at real-time speed - there is no intervention. No Slo-mo, no still shots. (If they want to grade officials after the match using slow-mo - have at it. But let the match be officiated in real time)

4. Dissent is a tricky issue - football is an emotional sport, and we don't want to legislate that emotion out of the game. But, if you make a public display in the direction of the official - YC (this includes, any non-captain who surrounds an official following an incident). If you make an obvious gesture asking for another player to be cautioned - YC. If the officials are consistent in this - players will adjust their behavior. But it has to be consistent.

Also - these should be full-time officials. I am not sure if they are right now - but if they are not - this should be their full time job, and the week should be spent doing fitness work, training, film study, and reviewing recent games as a group - so that everyone starts to see what should be called, and what is not a foul - instead of having so many different opinions. If they work as a group, we should see more consistency.

@Tonio you don't think this everton side will be a tough game with so many out for us?
Hi Gio. No I honestly don’t see us having any issues at all with this game. We’re at home and are beginning to find our rhythm again. We ought to comfortably despatch them. (y)

I’l like to see Arteta tethered with a length of rope which restricts him to the edges of the technical are only
Or an electric fence round the TA with the voltage upped every time it is breached. It seems to work with the cattle and horses in the farms round here.

This. Stop VAR re-reffing the game, there should only be one ref, the guy on the field. All VAR does with sending referees to the screen is to undermine their authority!

I’d favour a shock collar in this case. A buried wire on the border of the technical area. If he leaves it, zap!

Why does every incident have to be compared to something from one of our games? I mean, it's inconsistency, we all know it's inconsistency and that's been the case pretty much forever not just since VAR. Not only that, but the media also know there's a problem with consistency, it's been mentioned by them very many times. It gets it's fair share of analysis.

It doesn't have to be from one of "our games" I just used that incident because it happened in the same round of games and were highly comparable incidents and, in the case of the Maupay decision, a particularly controversial one.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I don't think asking for the premier football analysis show on Television to do some actual fucking anayslis rather than joke about shithousery is either "conspiratorial" or outlandish.

It's been this way forever, it's nothing new but actually, you already get analysis. And plenty of it, just not the same thing every time. It sort of gets spread around and get's brought up fairly often on different shows. I guess each show has it's own pace and degrees of how they present things. One show might be more easy going than another.

We all know there's inconsistency and we don't need every single TV show to keep banging on about it every time it happens and showing examples, if they did there would be enough time to fit the actual football in let alone anything else :D

A reminder that some things were not better 30 years ago.

I feel less or football has lost sight of some of the fun these days. Now it's all big bucks it's so serious.

If true they are totally fucked. 😂🤣😂🤣

Cooper has done an unbelievable job in taking them from lower end of the championship to the premier league. He deserves huge credit in the bank for that.
They don’t look great right now but it can’t be easy dealing with a massive squad (look at Chelsea) and it does appear a number of players over the past year and a half were signed behind his back.

All depends what these owners want; if it were me, I’d build slowly and take 17th if offered it now but I get the impression this guy wants more than that.
They’re unlikely to go down but would make me chuckle if they ditch Cooper for Nuno and one of the 3 below them get their act together.
