Emery's Villa three points behind us as it stands. People rightfully give Levy shit but you have to say Conte completely underachieved. Emery's levels ahead of him.

Perhaps it is me but the Refs these last few months seem to be letting much more go without giving fouls or bookings. Players are regularly leaving their leg in when tackling and pushing all over the pitch seems to be the norm. Corners have become a free for all with players rugby tackling right in front of the Refs with no punishment given.

Why didn't he challenge for the title with Arsenal then?

Think a lot of it comes down to will and effort by the players. Look at Villa today - fighting and running for every ball all over the pitch.
Arsenal didn't have it and our players surely don't bother now. If all that is on the manager is another question.

I get really bored with the excuses people make for Conte. We’re entitled to more than saying the players are lazy for 20m a year

Well that is more on the players than the manager, as an elite professional you should be expected to put in a high level of effort.

Well you said Emery is levels ahead of Conte and yet when Emery was managing arsenal, he had them in roughly the same place as Wenger had in the previous two seasons.
Which was the same place Conte had finished with a better team the year before. If you look at what the two have achieved this season relative to their sides, it's chalk and cheese.

I'm not suggesting Conte's not a good manager - I think he did a bad job managing us this season. And comparing it to Emery is a way of showing that you can make excuses or you can prove your worth.

With hindsight replacing Wenger was always likely to lead to a dip. Happened with Fergie too - when a manager has been there that long the whole club reflects them. Emery is a top manager

Would anyone take Watkins as a replacement if Kane were to leave?
He's certainly one of the best options out there.

He's a really good all-round footballer and much quicker and better at pressing than Kane.

He's also nowhere near as clinical or creative, though. I watched a lot of Villa over the pandemic and, christ, he missed SO many chances when Grealish was setting him up.

Regardless easily one of the top 3 potential replacements for me, if we could get him. The way Villa are heading it might be a bit too much of a sideways move to make sense before long.

And Conte took Tottenham from 8th to 4th last season. Emery is clearly a good manager but he isn't levels ahead of Conte.

I've just taken a look at the table - when did Villa sneak up there?

Emery seems to be better with underdogs.

He was great in Spain with teams around Villa's level like Sevilla and Villareal but struggled more at the bigger clubs like Arsenal and PSG where there were massive expectations.

Not sure why? Maybe he's not as good as dealing with big egos in the dressing room? He ended up a bit of a figure of fun at Arsenal - weren't the players making fun of him behind his back?

Newcastle haven't been amazing but both they and Villa have been looking to get the ball forward at every opportunity. Makes for a good game. Our next manager really needs to get us playing that way. Negative football doesn't even win anything in the PL, and it's horrible to watch.
