Is the schedule as hectic after the World Cup as before, I’m sure they can find a place after the World Cup to fit 1 or 2 fixtures in

While I appreciate a lot of people will be literally devastated by the news I also think a lot of people overplay the importance of the Queen to average people (and football players)
For example, during the Man Utd. game yesterday they were putting United's performance, and the subdued crowd down to the death of the Queen (fans were fine until they started singing about the GLazers and then Sociedad scored a minute later)

Having said that i expected at least one round of matches to be called off (the thought of people travelling for matches doesn't even come into the thinking for these matters which are meticulously planned out well ahead of time)

How will UEFA handle it though? Will they expect English teams playing away to fulfill fixtures but allow Home teams to postpone?

At The London Stadium last night proper respect was shown prior to the kick off by the WH fans, but as soon as the whistle blew it was as if a switch was flicked and thousands of home fans went instantly Neanderthal, flipping the bird, doing wanker signs and vehemently screaming obscenities like demented loons.

By all accounts they would have cancelled yesterday's games with more notice.
Yeah probably, but UEFA will be extremely reluctant to cancel any next week as this is the tightest European calendar well...ever.

Even a single game being cancelled creates a huge headache and logistically I don't see how they fit any more in.

Of course this is unprecedented and I might be completely wrong, but I'll be very surprised if the European games don't go ahead next week.

Exactly and we know east end folk love the queen like their own mum, hell they even have a pub named after a queen.

That's why it was truly laughable the way BT Sport tried putting the United performance on the events of the day.

I wonder what percentage of football fans would want the games cancelled? Not a majority is my guess. I wonder if even a majority of the population would.

If there was a national uproar at the football going ahead I guess I’d understand but I don’t think that would happen. Either way it’s getting cancelled so will just have to deal with it.
I'm sure that's the case. I don't personally have an opinion on whether this weekends fixtures should or shouldn't go ahead. If it's off I will completely understand why and vice versa.

The issue, and why I felt compelled to post was because of the complete lack of empathy and understanding some posters were displaying. They don't care, that's their prerogative, but it's been made abundantly clear in many many posts that others on here do. There is just a clear lack of understanding and empathy being shown by some posters just because a game might be called off and they wanted to watch it.

Good post. Agree totally.

I can't see all footballing being cancelled until October 1st after the International break.
Looking at the bbc fixture list page the 2 EFL games have been postponed today.

Yeah I think people should be respectful but there’s a lot of people, myself included, who value Spurs a lot more than the Queen so understandably they might feel a bit put out. I don’t think it’s disrespectful in itself to want football to go ahead.

Yeah I think in a normal season this wouldn't be that big of a deal, but this is the most condensed fixture list there has ever been.

I think there are probably ways around it, though. Seen someone suggest cancelling FA Cup replays again, which seems sensible and would free up some room in the schedule for the postponed league games to be played.
The problem is not with the domestic games but the European games, there are 7 teams, 9 if you include Celtic and Rangers who have midweek games next week, are these games going to be postponed? If not, then why cancel this weekend’s games?
There are 4 games away in Europe and 5 in the UK, are the away games going to be allowed to go ahead and the home games cancelled? If any of these games are called off, when will they be rescheduled as all the teams mid-weeks are full between now and the World Cup.

Yeah I don't think they will postpone the European games.

I could see this weekend going ahead with tributes/respects

And next weekends fixtures being cancelled for the funeral.

Yeah but there will be others that don't. Its about showing respect rather than picking which one is more important to me. Spurs will still be here next week The queen will not.

I'm sure there are many of us, especially those that are a bit older, that will have been to funerals of people we hardly knew. Mere acquaintances, or family members by law etc. Yeah you could find more productive or exciting things to do than go to a funeral of someone you hardly know, but you do it because it's the right thing, and it helps others through their grief.

Like I said I'll understand it both ways, but it's the lack of respect for those who do care that smarts.

Yeah that’s fair, though I’d argue no one goes to funerals of someone they’ve never met before but the queen is a bit of a unique instance and even though it’s weird to me, clearly I’m in the minority in terms of putting her death on a par with any other old person that has died.

like I say though, I’m not even sure a majority of people would want the games cancelled and we shouldn’t pander to a minority. Guess we’ll never know though.

The Irish FA have said that all their weekend fixtures are postponed, I'm sure this'll be the line the others take.

So people don't go to funerals or at least travel to pay their respects to people they never met?

How many turned up to pay respects to Ghandi, Mandela, Kennedy, Martin Luther King etc etc etc.

I agree neither do I, but, if games are called off as a matter of respect, how long does that ” respect” go on? 5 Teams will be at home from Tuesday 5 days after the death of the Queen.

If they're called off this weekend it's more about respect obviously.

If they're called off next weekend it will be to do with the funeral and massive police coordination that requires.

Calling both weekends off is a tad OTT IMHO....but of course will respect it.

Again, imo, it's still possible to show appropriate respect this weekend with football going ahead and then cancelling the next weekend to extend respect and of course manage the funeral.

That just seems like a reasonable balance to me.

I'd agree with this.
