Ok, I have too much time on my hands and so I thought I would work out our points haul compaired to this time last season and also that of our rivals for top 4:

I have replaced the following:

Burnley with Newcastle
Hull City with West Brom
Portsmouth with Blackpool

Tottenham
Man City (H) -2
Stoke City (A) 0
Wigan (H) -3
West Brom (A) -2
Total = -7

Man City

Tottenham (A) +1
Liverpool (H) +2
Sunderland (A) -1
Blackburn (H) -2
Total = 0

Liverpool
Arsenal (H) +1
Man City (A) -1
West Brom (H) 0
Birmingham (A) 0
Total = 0

Aston Villa
West Ham (H) +2
Newcastle (A) -1
Everton (H) +2
Stoke (A) -1
Total = +2

I know this isn't an exact science but compared to last seasons corresponding results we are 7 points worse off with only Villa points haul being better than last seasons with 2 more.

If we beat Wolves home and away, improve on just one other result, if Villa do their typical post Christmas crash and if everything else stays equal.....

....we'll finish 4th.

I'm sure a brigade of bashers will come along to say this is all pointless but it's all good and interesting. I was thinking about this myself. We are gonna have a hard time making up the points, but we definitely threw away some results last year.

I would probably throw Arsenal into the mix as well, we had a chance to overtake them right up to the last game last season.

The kind of chance you'd have bet on only if you were really desperate to donate all your money to Paddy Power.

Not comparable as the comparison of points isn't based on times in teh season rather than games vs games. They don't happen at the same time in consecutive seasons.

Its a very interesting comparison though, and will keep a running total of how we are doing vs our rivals.

i think it's a fairly decent measure. ALthough In my head i'd paired Newcastle with Hull and Burnley with west brom! for no other reason that to put a positive spin on the draw at the horthorns. -6

We can console our defeat to wigan by beating wolves. -3

I just tossed a coin 38 times it went:

H, H, H, H, T, H, H, T, T, H, H, T, H, T, T, T, T, H, T, H ,T, T, H ,T, T, T, T, T, H, H, T, H, T, H, H, T, T, T

Tails won 20 points to 18.

Now I've tossed it another 5 times:

T, H, T, T, T,

Like for like, compared to the last time, it's 3 up! That means Tails must be heading for an even bigger victory this time!!

Which of course it doesn't at all.

You're looking at it too literally. Were in no way thinking we will get 4th if we get the exact same results as last season.

I like this kind of comparison because:
a) it gives me a guage of how the others are doing compared to us,
b) it gives me some perspective and
c) it makes things more interesting by thinking "great, if we win these two ties then that will put us back on track" just adds a bit of fun and excitement back to fixtures.

Ahh, you're right mate. Sorry. Just my job for the last four years has been working with mathematicians to calculate sporting probabilities, so my heads full of what's good and what's bad analysis.

And then to top it all, just to make me particularly anal about this stuff right now, I've almost finished reading a fantastic book about the history of probability theory, The Drunkards Walk by Leonard Mlodinow, which I can't recommend highly enough if you want a very readable introduction to the subject.
