Pochettino wasn't around when all that money was spent and that amount now wouldn't buy a lot. We may have spent lots of money, but there was no solid basis to the club. Winning cups is less important than changing the laughable mentality that has been there for decades.

The ramifications of what took place then and how profligate we were with our money are resounding now and having a big say in why we are close but don’t quite have the tools to get over the line today.

You don’t need to pay a big fat fee to attract quality players, Eriksen, Mahrez and no doubt others prove that. We revamped our scouting system because it failed big time not doing our research well enough and wasting money over and over again. We need that to change.
Eriksen and Mahrez were a gamble though not proven top end quality.

Oh I’m sorry, I thought you meant signing world class players but you mean only sign cheap potential that is going to turn into a world class player (y)

There’s no such thing as a guaranteed transfer success, just ask Chelsea when they signed Torres or Utd signing Di Maria. Every transfer has an element of risk

Quality is quality whatever end of the market it is, Eriksen and Mahrez are examples of players at a modest cost with the skills and technique to prove it. Our one exception in a sea of waste from the Bale money.

We don't have the funds to sign world class I never said we did, so we needed to be frugal with our decision making with the money we had we were not.

But we were... at the time they were some of the most exciting up and coming players in the world and certainly frugal getting seven for the cost of one...

Will spoiler as technically the wrong thread for this
  • Paulinho was regular starter for Brazil and won bronze ball for 3rd best player of the tournament while winning confed cup
  • Soldado just come off a season scoring 30 goals for Valencia and one of the best strikers in Spain
  • Lamella had been tearing up the Italian league for Roma and was one of the most exciting creative midfield players in Italy
  • Eriksen was Danish player of the year and Dutch football talent of the year
  • Chadli was a cheap squad player who had impressed playing against us in CL for Twente
  • Capoue was in the Ligue 1 team of the year and one of the best youth prospects
  • Chiriches.... well everyone makes at least one mistake

In hindsight you can say they weren’t great signings but at the time they were exciting signings that could improve what we already had

We arent going to compete with Man U Chelsea or City on wages due to the new stadium!
If we offer a top player 300k a week they'll offer 400k.
At the moment its going to be us Arsenal and Liverpool pulling away from the rest and counting on one of those 3 big spenders having a poor season caused by mismanagement or players sulking.
I live in hope that the money pulls out of Chelsea and City. Or some sugar daddy buys us.

I would absolutely hate that.

The 'NOW' generation of which I am not a part
want success and they want it now or preferably yesterday.
Prefabricated buildings don't last as long
as lovingly built traditional structures
using recycled or home grown materials.

That's stretching it a bit far.

Why?
You'd hate someone investing billions into the club allowing us to financially compete with the Citys, Chelseas and Man Us of this world?
If they invest and dont leave us in a financial mess after 5mins wheres the problem?

If Joe Lewis suddenly realises he can't take the money with him when he's gone and decides to really splash it on Spurs, does it make him a sugar dad?

I dont give a shit where it comes from provided it actually comes and is done properly.
If JL suddenly started splashing out big style you wont hear me moaning about it.

i despise Chelsea, City and PSG for being the play things of rich men. The fans who made the clubs are no longer a part of their success and are merely there to observe obscenely rich people playing with their toys. There is no merit in what they achieve. I have no problem with Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool in that respect because they grew to where they are. The others remind me of massive fake tits. I'm proud that we are mixing it with them without simply throwing more and more money at it to try to buy success, in which case yu might as well forget the football and just see who can write the biggest cheque each year.

Yes I agree with all that and I hate it too but thats the reality of the world we live in.
If you want regular success I'm afraid thats the only way its gonna happen and Id rather have that than not but feeling warm and fuzzy inside knowing we are truly righteous.
