In spain though you normally just make a bid just above the clause and it will be accepted as the club gets more money usually

Do the Spanish ones count? I thought they only counted for domestic transfers, hence why someone (I forget who?) we're able to reject our bid despite meeting the clause.

If I'm not mistaken, we just have to give the player the money to pay the release himself. A bit more complicated for tax purposes but otherwise it works the same way.

Yeah I recall something about stupid tax levels doing it that way...

No they do count but the player has to pay the release fee and that is subject to tax for moves abroad i think but if you bid slightly above the clause for the player the club normally accepts as they get more money

A great prospect, not even remotely close to being worth 45m however.

A release fee isn't supposed to be a realistic fee, think of it more as a Buy It Now price on eBay.
You try and get that rhinestone denim jacket as cheaply as possible but sometimes you just don't need the agro and lump on at a premium to get in there and have it for the weekend

Exactly. Think of it like this: Archibaldandcrooksinho has a release clause of £20m at Sporting SC, that we can activate paying 5m tax. We tell the club that we are prepared to activate the clause, but also put in a £21.5m bid that comes with 1m tax as there is no dodgy third party workaround involved. They'll take the bid as they make £1.5m more than they would otherwise, and we save £2.5m.
