Here you go. I've watched Witsel too and when I have he has been very conservative with sideways passing (all the things most fans hated about Dembele 14/15 season, with non of the positives IMO).

Witsel
Passes*: 49.22
% of Passes Fwd: 73%
% Success Rate: 88%
Ave Pass length*: 15.86m
Key Passes*: 0.74

Wanyama
Passes*: 47.78
% of Passes Fwd: 70%
% Success Rate: 84%
Ave Pass length*: 17.56m
Key Passes*: 0.57

*per 90 mins
All stats are from 14/15 season ans these are the most recent available for Witsel in the league.

So what 20% more key passes? More foward passes, baring in mind what I have said is what is like is a player with decent defensive capability but with a bit more football (not Pirlo - I accept any cm in Poch's cm2 is going to have to be multi functional) that's exactly the type of nuanced difference I'd prefer.

Again, I still like Tolisso more (mainly because I've seen him more and is more of z known quantity to me) but others like Kramer (heavily linked last summer) are also worth considering. And there must be more out there, surely that's why we brought in Mitchell?

Failing that lets have a look at Lesniak in pre season, the kids tenacious, dynamic, diligent and was last seen dropping in between the CB's very much in the Poch mode.

Kramer's just signed permanently for Gladbach, so that one's off the table.

Playing a more offensive role in an inferior league.

% Success Rate: 86%
Ave Pass length*: 14.57m

Also Wanyama's stats under Poch (13/14)
Passes*: 104.54
% of Passes Fwd: 72%
% Success Rate: 84%

Take this as you will but I'm friends with Victor Wanyama's cousin and he thinks it's pretty nailed on with him coming here. Liverpool have shown an interest Klopp personally went up to him after the 3-2 game and told him he was the best player on the pitch that day. However he has been in constant touch with Poch for quite some time. I can give Mods some proof if they need it regards this info. Like I said take as you will.

Looking back at some old videos of his time at celtic where he had more freedom to get forward and express himself more you can see he has glimpses of yaya runs in him where once he gets going hes like a steam train. And the performance against barca in champions league was another level.

Poch clearly believes he is better utilised further back and used to break up play and must trust him in this role so I'm all for it.

Song for wanyama?? Good luck

I dont uunderstand why people can label him as crap.... Everytime I watch Saints, he seems to be the above the performance of most player. Mane would be the one we should sign as well.. lol

What about other stats like Passes, forward passes key passes ? I can't find them in the usual stat places but I've watched Witsel and you are not going tell me he's an inferior "footballer" with the ball to Wanyama, but he also works hard without it and I'd rather make a small defensive compromise for a bit more zip with the ball.

Tolisso would be my first choice too, I've seen a lot more of him.

And that has been my point all season, we don't always need a DM, every minute of every game.

I've seen you say before that more strikers doesn't equal more goals, so why should playing a dm as opposed to not playing one make us more defensive? Surely it gives license to the attacking players to attack with more freedom, the dm is key to our width.

There seems to be a lot of obsessing over Wanyama's passing ability in this thread when surely the main reason we want him in the team is for his defensive qualities and winning back possession when we lose it.

Obviously we want him to be able to pass but he's comparable enough with other players of his type at least to the point where this really shouldn't be as big of a deal as it is.

I think it is more that a lot of people are slating him for being poor on the ball. He's no Xabi Alonso but holds his own against the Matic's of this world IMO.

I actually think he is much better than Dier on the ball. If we are looking for direct competition/back up for Dier then I certainly don't see the problem with this signing.

Dier/Wanayama/Dembele/Bentaleb seems like a good mix and blend if, as it seems, Poch wants to stay with a powerful base in the CM 2.

100% agree. Two like for like destroyers. Then I have no doubt that free'd up from the designated DM role to more of the defensive support/box to box role, and if fully fit, Bentaleb can save us a lot of money and be the Dembele alternative.

You would take the total minutes played, 2495 in Wanyama's case, take his total forward passes say 859, divide them by the total and multiply by 90.

859/2495 x 90 = 30.99

It gives a better representation of what you can expect per game.

However in other cases stats could be more valuable on a per game, per start or per sub basis. It's why statistics are very hard to truly decipher, and can be manipulated to suit different agendas.

Thanks SS(y).
As you say stats are malleable and can been agenda specific.
