Surely with some of the fees they’ve been paying out £5m would be a great buy for them at their standard.
If we could get £5m back but more importantly his wages off the books I’d be happy with that, actually I’d relinquish a transfer fee just to get him out.
He reportedly earns 200k pw so getting him off the books is a savings of 10m for the year so completely agree If we could just get someone stupid enough to sign him permanently it would be a great result.
If we don't he'll go on loan again next season and wouldn't surprise me if he played a blinder to try and earn a contract elsewhere. He wouldn't be the first player who suddenly finds motivation and form in their last year of a contract.

nobody is paying him 200k per week.

We will have to contribute the vast majority even probably with a perm transfer.

I'm pretty sure we're not paying him £200k a week either. I'm pretty sure that figure has been debunked by an ITK. 200 is the number with bonuses which he almost certainly isn't achieving. For some reason I have a figure of his basic as £125k

We just need to get this lump off our books. Looks like the due diligence has not been done on him. There were always talk around him being a lazy player. he won't fit into a Post Team, he will never have the fitness levels. He has wasted his talent, he had the skill but as with a number of players, they get the big money move and then kick back and chill....

It's the predicament we got into with Poch. He insisted he didn't want a DOF, so we had a talent scout in Hitchen but Poch had too much influence for someone who had a poor track record in player recruitment.
This is why I get really annoyed when fans say "if Poch wants him then we should pay whatever". Happened throughout Conte's time too. In fact ten Hag's signings at United are a perfect example of what can go wrong when you don't have a proper system in place to vet a manager's requests.

Agreed, at the time Poch could do no wrong but the reality is he doesn't have time to scour the market for the right fit player and do proper due diligence.
This was also the time there was a shift away from recruiting potential, which we developed under Poch and had success to with to buying finished (or near finished) articles. We've only just returned to the original model 5 years later and we're having success again.

Serge Aurier is joining Galatasaray, apparently. Him and Tanguy were super close, so that’s a nice little reunion for him.

Should have cut and run as soon as it was obvious he wasn’t going to be good enough. He’s only declined in value with each passing season.

100% agree. It’s far too simple a strategy to give a manager what he wants: their choices need to be vetted, and they’re very likely more short term or too specific than is in the interest of the club

It’s tricky now but would have thought he could have gone in his second season with us at a cut price.
He was still putting in some good performances then and remember, Poch had said it would take him a year to 18 months to be ready (!).
We wouldn't write off an expensive signing without giving them a fair chance first.
Is we spent that much on a player, you've got to try everything you can to get them to their potential, not just flog them cheap after a season.

I don't think anybody expected it to turn out the way it has.

Big problem with this guy is that we overpaid, meaning his “book value” is always higher than what anyone will pay. Even shipping him off this summer for £5m, we will make a loss for the purposes of ffp and still will have to subsidise his wages (and the possibility of a loyalty bonus…..total joke that) - means we are probably stuck with him until his contract ends

Think his wages are the biggest problem for us rather than the transfer fee. He has an inventive to stay on our books coz no one else is paying him 200k a week. If he gets a few nice loans, as he has, then he plays and gets his money.

Assuming he isn’t arsed about his career and massive underachievement, it’s been a great few years for him. Gotten to live in different countries, experienced different cultures and football styles, not killed himself working hard and made a fortune. And we bankrolled it.
