There was something floating about a few weeks back that he was looking to go back to Holland due to family issue or something. Clear Ajax want him and have maybe had some encouragement it is a doable deal.

From the outside, wouldn't think they'd be able to match what we'd want fee wise but suppose considering he is still young, was at them as a youngster and knows the league, maybe they think he is worth making the extra push for. Don't know if they'd try and push a player our way as part of any deal.

If it’s right that he’s homesick it’s a real shame for him. Think he has bags of potential and talent. But moving countries during a pandemic can’t have been easy for a young guy. I’d rather he stayed but if we get a decent fee then I have no problem with us reinvesting in someone else.

If we got Madueke for a similar (ish) price then I'd be happy, especially given that he's become homegrown, but if not then I'd really rather we sold Lucas than Bergwijn tbh.

really? lucas has a history of producing in the premier league (~10 goals in 2018/19 + multiple champions league standout performances), bergwijn has scored 1 competitive goal in the last ~12 months.

think people put too much value on what a player could be in comparison to what a player is right now. bergwijn *could* be a decent player for us, but lucas already is and has shown it on multiple occasions.

Sell sell sell , need better, need more consistency and need more goals from this type of player, unfortunately he ticks none of these boxes

I like Bergwijn and think he will come good at some point but unfortunately whilst he has tricks etc, he needs to be more effective in games and that is through output.

There's plenty I would sell first but that's dependant on interest. I think he has all the tools but maybe not the mentality.

He may have to be sacrificed for the greater good (Hot Fuzz style)

Fair points. Big difference for me is Moura is 29 and in his prime. I like Moura. He gets goals and works hard. He appears to have a great attitude. Personally, I think he is a bit low on ability to be a guaranteed starter so if he doesn't want to be a squad player then he might be sold next summer.

Bergwijn is 23 and only been here 1 and a half seasons. I think he's a good player with some potential. But he's playing for a team with top 4 aspirations. He has to get goals and assists this season if he wants to play more regularly. I'd like him to have 1 more season to see if there's something there.

He’ll come good I’m sure of it. Definitely just lacking confidence which he seems to be getting over pre season.. Would be such a backwards step for him going back to Netherlands

Stevie's goal return is actually shocking for a winger.

Need to sell if a decent bid comes in, unfortunately.

(good move)

Yeah, it's definitely an interesting one but I'm not sure I'd even count Lucas as someone who, right now, should be anywhere near starting. I know many on the forum disagree but I genuinely think he should have been one of the players we were looking at shipping out this summer and I think 9/10 he actively detracts from what the team is trying to do.

I haven't been too impressed with Bergwijn but at the very least he has technical quality and shows maturity in his decision making and ball retention. Lucas is tactically uncoachable - he can't play on the right because he doesn't track his runners and he can't keep possession half the time (Poch worked this out and then so did Jose, which is why his best periods for us came when Kane was out and when he played 10 under Jose). However, when you put him central, whilst he can cause chaos with his dribbling, he wastes countless opportunities to play people through, lacks the footballing IQ to make the right decisions in the final third, and more often than not runs into a blind alley or gets tackled.

Every season he performs for 3/4 games against shit opposition - he's done it this preseason - but I'm fairly confident that come October people will be back to being incredibly frustrated by him. He's also one of the older members of the squad now so this would be the last chance to get a decent fee for him.

Overall I think RW is a big weakness of ours but I would rather have a young Bergwijn in the squad than Lucas on the whole.

in an ideal world, i 100% agree. i think there’s something in him and he *could* be great, but there’s that word again - COULD be. he isn’t right now. and if there’s a chance that we can sell one of him or lucas to fund a more proven commodity such as Sarr (who, in an injury plagued first PL season, contributed to more goals than bergwijn’s entire PL career) i’m picking bergwijn every single time.

I think the man himself would beg to differ :cautious:

Scored against Villa in the last home game of the season just a couple of months ago.

I think Nuno is dead right focusing on improving our Wingers and unfortunately I don't see Bergwijn within shouting distance of ever being Champions league caliber and wouldn't make the bench for any of our competitors for a CL spot.

The sad truth is he has limited end product and worse he cannot help us progress the ball. He always makes the safe backwards pass - one of our biggest problems as a squad in generating shots. If he improved his product in front of goal he could be a useful squad player for a mid table team at best in my view. The stats don't lie and the eye test isn't any better, and at 23 I wouldn't be making any bets on him making massive improvements. Let's take what Ajax are offering and invest in another young prospect.

I feel a bit sorry for Bergwijn as Jose clearly wasn't the right manager for him and his confidence has been on a steady decline since his debut goal. However, I also feel like we've seen enough of him to know that he's unlikely to ever be much more than a solid if unspectacular mid-table wide player. He's quick but rarely beats a man, has a good shot but lacks composure, shows glimpses of creativity but not regularly enough. He's the quintessential 'nearly man'.

Maybe he'll turn it around and step up a notch, but I really don't get that impression watching him. If we can get our money back for him (or close to) I think we'd be better off cutting our losses and pushing for someone like Kvaratskhelia to compete with Gil and Lucas for that role.
