Love his endeavour and attitude and his wand of a right foot...

But...

However much his defending has improved he still has a long way to go. Every chance Liverpool had first half went through Porro. He needs a bit more help and cover because he's simply not a natural defender like Udogie is.

Having said that his improvement is rapid. Great attitude
I'm thrilled to see him improving defensively but while most were drawing lines when Salah was looking for Diaz I was watching PP showing a real lack of awareness of the impending danger

I also feel a bit sorry for Emerson who ain't done much wrong either...

Their goal and the disallowed goal came from balls played in from their right (our left) side of the pitch. I would agree he could have been a bit tighter to Diaz for the disallowed goal (although I suspect he was also trying to play him offside)

He got done by Diaz for the wrongly disallowed goal; done by Van Dijk at the far post for their goal; and was beaten for both the double save by Vic early in the first half and the chance Salah put through for Diaz (I think) at the end of the first half.

None of those were glaring individual errors by him by any stretch but the pattern was clear. He needs more help defensively as he's not a natural one on one defender in the same way Udogie is however much and rapidly he is improving.

I'm a huge Emerson fan but I'm not entirely sure he would have done that much better with the issues I highlight above. Maybe better positioning and 1V1 but it's a product of our set up that the fullbacks will get caught out occasionally. Udogie and VDV are much faster than Romero/Porro/Emerson and it shows.

Still Porro's improvement is heartening and he's such a great squad guy. Will only get better you'd think.

Plenty still to work on. Can’t blame him for VVD pulling intelligently on to him for the equaliser. CBS were poor, Rom doing a Dier running on to the goal line when it hardly ever makes sense to do so

This guy could play anywhere on the right, technically so good, it’s not even his long passing it’s his vision is unreal.

Proper tenacious as well. We knew he could play but I think he’s taken the defensive side of his game up a level.

Definitely a level up on last season, just good coaching, you can see it on the pitch the whole team plays as a unit.

One of my favourite moments of the game was right near the end, Porro was working his socks off and he won a corner and you could hear him loudly cheer and celebrate it. This made the crowd cheer with him and pumped up the whole atmosphere too. His passion is unmatched.

This guy is a G, he tried to get the crowd going multiple times today and always looks so intense (in a good way), he’s got those Lamela crazy eyes.

Somehow we’ve got a really, really promising back 4 now.

I love how passionate he has become about defending. He seems to be taking more pride in this side of the game, than the attacking third. Which I love seeing. The whole back 4 are just loving it.

I think this is the answer. Perisic was total shit last season defending, but has a new lease of life in preseason just playing as the winger that he naturally is. Nothing I've seen from Porro makes me think that there's any way that he can live as a full back in the Premier League. Maybe he works as a WB on the continent with an extra CB to cover, but we're not playing there or in this way. I think we need to cut bait on playing him as a RB at all and just use him behind Deki in the pecking order as a winger where he used to play, and as RB cover if needed. I'd almost rather see Eric Dier play the more defensive inverted RB as an option behind Royal.

Have to see what Ange comes up with for them I suppose, but I just cannot see a defender in this man.
Here to take my medicine on the above. He's been a class above so far this season, and really answered any critics such as myself.

Love this. A massive, great genuine turn. We should have a thread about when us fans are wrong but big enough to admit it. Bravo sir 👍

He’s been great this season, so many of us were questioning him starting ahead of Royal given how good he was the last half of the season but it’s a no brainer for me now.
I do actually feel sorry for Royal in that respect!

Absolute rubbish. How many games have you watched this season? He’s been rock solid.
Did you watch the palace game?

Didn’t see him rush in and be beaten nearly giving away a goal? Or when he was slow to close down an attacker who could have scored? You may not notice these things.

As I said he’s brilliant going forward. But defensively he’s still got to improve to match the standards of the other three defenders.
