Just so reassuring having someone like him who can sweep up at the back and it's something we've missed for a long time.

Honestly felt like once the Palace forwards realised how quick VDV actually is, they were almost pulling out of any foot races with him at times because they knew they'd be second best. The combination of height, speed and mobility really make him awkward to come up against.

Unless you're rapid and got about 5M on him you're not beating him in a one-to-one race, there is a very high level of satisfaction knowing that you're not getting beaten for pace at the back with VDV

Correct. Plus you can tell opposition players know this all already. Hughes didn’t attempt to drive on after being played in as soon as he saw VDV on the charge.

This guy is everything I think we all wanted and more

Insane we got him with seemingly no competition

In terms of importance to the team I'd place him just behind maddison. The drop off of he doesn't play is truly frightening

If he continues at these levels at the age of 22 then he is almost certain to become one of the best defenders in world football by the time he hits 25.

High praise but he's to me had a similar impact with us as Van Dijk did with Liverpool. He's not just physically exceptional, he's smart, and it radiates such confidence to the team around him. We've got a gem here.

Amazingly, I already feel relaxed when he's racing back as I know the afterburners will go on and he will get there first. It's so nice not to be anxious in situations that we would have been in last season. I have so much confidence in him.

He was immense last night. Back to back titanic performances from him. Hope he makes it three next week.

I think how quickly he adapted was a bit of a surprise to ourselves included, also helped Romero looks super composed this season

I loved when Davies just let the ball go behind him knowing VdV was there. It was like "yeah you got that one".

The one scare was the kick to the knee. That's what worries me most this season and why I won't get expectations too high. Need to keep VdV and Romero fit. It's the pace as well that's key. We had Dier on the bench and if he came on its a totally different game. I would prefer Dorrington or Phillips although not sure what their pace is like. Must be better than Dier. It's a key requirement as Ange said to have that pace in defence.
