I blame CAA Base for this, how dare they not have more higher end players on their books. If they had any manners they would try and poach MvdV so we can get a nice easy deal sorted.

I made a conscious decision when ange was appointed to have a clean slate on players.

Yes we need to move some on, but I'm not making any judgements on them based upon the last 4 years of shite football.

I'm going to put my trust in Ange and see where it takes us. If Ange says get rid of someone like Kane, then we should just go with it and see where we end up.

I guess I'm "Trusting the process"

...shudder.
Relevant to this sentiment (which I support btw) is if people cast their minds back to 13/14 and just prior to when Poch took over. Danny Rose looked a shell of a player - crap defensively and mediocre going forwards. 18 months later he was arguably the best left back in the country.

I want CB reinforcements in, and if Levy is stopping Ange from bringing in new faces where Ange thinks we need them then that’s reason to feel thoroughly pissed off/deflated. However, there are countless examples of new managers reinventing and rejuvenating players and I’m choosing to be optimistic about what Ange might get out of some of them.

You do realize that virtually the same defence with the same players DID finish in the top 4 the season before last ????????
You seem to be arguing that our current crop of CBs are of sufficient quality to remain in place. So for the record, do you think that none of Dier, Sanchez, Tanganga or Davies need to be upgraded? I mean, clearly our manager wants different personnel at CB; or else, why would Levy be negotiating for VDVen and Tapsoba? Just for shits and giggles?

There’s been no news so people are making stuff up in their heads it seems

Yep. And when we sign him, the next whinge will about not getting Tapsoba, and IF we get Tapsoba, the next whinge will be that we haven’t given away all our unwanted players etc…etc…

Yes, but if he wants to give people a chance then he needs to give everyone an even chance.

There are no guarantees that signing VDV will be an upgrade, and perhaps Ange has seen enough in training to warrant giving them a couple of weeks on the training ground.

Including Rodon, who you've missed off the list.

Hey, I want 2 or 3 new CBs as much as the next Spurs fan

But we also must come to terms with the fact that believing new signings will automatically improve the team is one of the biggest cognitive biases in football.

There’s probably a greater than 50% chance that Van de Ven is a worse Premier League player than Dier and/or Lenglet, at least for the next couple of years.

Of course, he‘s young and has a high ceiling so there’s potential. I hope we get him and he turns out to be an absolute diamond.

But the fact we’ve very publicly courted new CBs contradicts that. If as you say, the reason Levy hasn’t completed on VDV is because “Ange wants to give everyone a chance”, why was Levy negotiating for new CBs in the first place. We’ve had corroboration from 3 of our most trusted itks that the deal for VDV was completed last week. Surely that indicates that Ange has already concluded (what every supporter and his dog knows) that we do indeed require new personnel in the centre of a flat-back 4 high-line defence, otherwise he wouldn’t have sanctioned that much publicised search/negotiation for new CBs; or at least looked to keep it under wraps. Isn’t it more conceivable that, as per our most respected ITKs, a deal for VDV was finalised, but then Levy has tried to “renegotiate terms in our favour”. (And who knows, perhaps he’ll do just that and people will lord him for doing so.) But given the timeline of events, and Levy’s “previous” for trying to extract the maximum value from a deal, isn’t that more credible than “Ange wants to give Dier a change to to see if he can operate in a system for which he’s woefully unsuited”?

I just don't want us to find ourselves in a position where we end up paying as much for someone like Tosin as we sodding well would have for VDV or maybe even Tapsoba if desperate enough later on in the window. It's self-sabotage if we had this deal lined up and then backed out.

Why even bother negotiating for the f'ing player at all.

It's what always happens! We didn't want to pay £35m for Mane so paid £30m for Sissoko

We all need to take a breath here. We get itk and then read extra into it and it all spirals into a meltdown. Seems to me that we agreed a deal but Wolfsburg don’t like the way we are structuring it. Doesn’t mean it’s over just means there is still more to do. I know history tells us that it doesn’t usually end up great for us but I refuse to believe we won’t get defenders in.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that deal(s) have been lined up but Ange is being given an opportunity to assess before pulling the trigger. If he's going to give Ndombele a chance, why not the others? It doesn't always have to be Levy playing silly buggers, even though that's how many like to view things. This might even be at Ange's request.

We need to look at the wages not the fee. We can likely afford much higher transfer fees but we don't go for those players because we don't pay the going rate on wages for those players
