There will not be coming anyone in until we sell any of our defenders. And as we have seen, this is hard as feck. You know what Conte said, it is so comfortable at Spurs, the facilities are sooo nice. Even Sanchez geting booed by his own fans will not make him go to Russia when you ave so nice showers and and umbrella drinks at the training ground.... 🍹

Come on be fair. You could throw rotten eggs at me and I still wouldn't want to live in Russia right now

Is he better than what we have? Serious question?

If we have a limited budget why this guy? I put him more in the Tosin bracket.....
Don't think it takes much to be better than what we have

We are not going to sign a world class defender with no European Football and possibly losing our best current player.

It more about the Ceiling this player has to be coached to. Dier, Davies, Sanchez are not going to get any better than they currently are Japhet possibly could with Age but have not seen anything from him in the last couple of years that says he can reach another level.

It's down to whether they think this player has the room to improve (best guess)

How the fuck did we manage to get Maddison over the line that swiftly when we're still negotiating like ****s?

If we are not provided with 2 quality CBs ASAP, theres honestly no point in taking part of the season. 10-20 finish for sure.

Seriously, who would want to live in Russia? You really can't blame him for not accepting that. At least not me, as much as I want him gone. I want him go to anywhere and I don't care where, but I don't blame him for not accepting the move to Russia.

Forgive the slightly OT reasoning seeing as we are in VdV thread, but:

Harry Kane - probably more privy to inner goings on at club than most.
Harry Kane - "club needs to show ambition"
Harry Kane - Unlikely to make such comments if there are genuine financial reasons why we can't. That would just be shitty. It's like saying to the homeless person on the street, "You should get some new shoes, you have holes in yours..."

So, seems to me we absolutely have the wherewithal to show ambition (else Kane wouldn't make the comments?), the board just choose not to.

This CB search being ANOTHER prime example.

How can anyone be happy with that? 😑

If they ain't signed, I am checking out for the season before the Brentford game. If Dier starts, we are done

You can take your Club Chairman out of Mr Byrite but you can't take the Mr By wrong ones (or none at all) out of your Chairman :cautious:

Would be a massive slap in the face to us fans from Levy. Everyone knows hes not good enough to be in the team. If he starts, that is just complete negligence from Levy. He should resign immediately, regardless if it happens or not.

I think on its own, signing a CB in July/August isn't the biggest deal. Ultimately as long as you get the players you want/need then that's the important part. Especially if you're buying them for 4-5 years. If we get our targets in before the window closes then overall that's good for me.

Looking around the league, I think there was a flurry of early activity but it's now gone a bit quiet. Partly with pre-season starting properly and teams focused on other things. Partly going past July 1st and what season the money counts for etc... and all of that. Even Man City are having a minor issue bringing Gvardiol in. The Rice transfer took Arsenal ages and all of that. So I think slow moving transfer activity isn't that bad.

Having said that though... I think it's really bad form from us. Because it is a problem position we've had for so long and has been the constant issue raised by managers and fans. It's wild that even from a business perspective Levy doesn't see it as such an urgent one to address in that kind of a way. Whilst overall it would be okay if we do end up with the right targets... this was of 'playing the game'. This way of doing deals seems to benefit no-one except Levy and the bottom line.
it doesn’t benefit his bottom line either

The prem is going to be a massive jump up in quality for Van De Ven., that's my main concern. He just doesn't look ready.

Dier would probably start over him to begin with. Unpopular opinion but would be interesting to see who Ange picked.

I do not buy the no European football thing, i really don't think it matters on the b list of players we seem to shop for.

We haven't managed to bring in a centre back whether we have been in the champions league or not.

If we are getting 100m for Harry Kane we should be able to reinvest the majority of this into a couple of CBs.

Richarlison has already been signed to replace Kane in Levys mind. I would be very shocked if we shelled out 100m on a replacement for Kane.

What happens if we bought VdV and Tosin today, We then sell Kane next week and could afford Tapsoba and Laporte or any other World class CB that we may be working on under the radar, but we've now filled our quota at CB with two lesser players, just to get it done early. Sometimes it pays to wait for the dominos to fall.

So we didn't win games with this defence? I've seen all of these defenders have good and bad games.

This is just another overreaction.
They have, more bad than good but I get your point.

The difference here is they will be in a high line against Premier league front lines. I have my doubts about this system in the Prem even with new quick CB's. With the likes of Dier or Davies in there it is a recipe for disaster. They just aren't quick or mobile enough to play this way against fast forwards and creative players with the ability to keep finding them. Romero is a good CB but his strenghs are his aggression and ability to read the game not outpace a CF in a footrace from the halfway line. If we don't add some pace we are in big trouble unless Ange changes the way we play.

So why wouldn't anyone with any sense just buy Topsoba(If he is the #1 target) now for less than VdV and Tosin then worry about the back up if and when Kane does go. I'd rather get the one we really want and have a starting XI player in than maybe end up with nothing at all.

Or we secure quality, starting caliber personnel early enough in the transfer window to gel with the squad and absorb the instructions from a new manager and then we look at deals for depth as and when they present themselves.

It's so blindingly obvious to everyone apart from the powers that be.
