Verts was the one defender we have who can reliably bring the ball out of a heavy press . Expect more faffing in our defensive third .

I wouldn't say overplayed, the amount of minutes he's racked up over the years is just standard fare especially for a CB.

I would disagree with the characterization of Vertonghen's minutes as typical. He's definitely at the upper range when you consider all competitions and national team duty. Playing around with Transfermarkt's data screener for minutes played puts Jan with the 2nd most minutes played last year! That's of any league, any position worldwide, supposedly (Rui Patricio barely beats him out). He played the 118th most minutes the year before. I guess I don't know if Transfermarkt is accurate, but they have a big data set - there are about 1,100 players each of the last two years who have played 3,600+ minutes (the rough equivalent of 40 full games). So for Jan to be the 2nd-highest and 118th-highest is saying something. And this is when he is 30 and 29; he's at an age when he should really be putting less strain on his body. Not sure if this link will work, but this is what I was looking at: link.

Meanwhile, Belgium defender Vertonghen has returned to light training as he aims to recover from a hamstring problem suffered in the 2-0 win at Huddersfield earlier this month. The centre-half is expected to be fit again at the beginning of December.

With the way our defense is playing right now we could really use the back 3 against some of these more prolific offenses. Need Jan back soon!

Contract extended for another year until 2020. Makes sense, since we have a lot of work to do in other departments in the coming 2 windows. He's also been phenomenal in the past couple years, so I'm glad he'll be with us a little while longer.

What's the source for this? I've seen it in a few places but none have quoted a source.

Such bizarre stats on whoscored.com. They had Son as our worst player?!
And Eriksen's 20 mins was rated higher than Sissoko's 90. That's like a Garth Crooks "team of the week" rating!

Him and Toby are an unbelievable duo. I feel like we have a shot against any team in the world with those two back there.

They are brilliant but I just posted elsewhere that as a two + Davies we will get ruined by serious pace at Wembley plus we cant push right up to the half way line either!

I had a dream once that Jan and Toby got ruined.

Woke up laughing at how implausible my dreams were becoming.

I had a dream that I was sat next to Diego Maradona when he was off his tits, and he was touching me inappropriately...
