I think because the club won't be viewing this transfer in isolation. If getting £3m for Lloris gives us the room to pay off Reguilon's contract, or subsidise Ndombeles wages on a loan, or accept a lower than ideal bid for Hojberg, then it would make sense to at least explore that option. Kill 2 of those outgoing birds with one stone and get us closer to making space for incomings.

As fans we get to talk about millions of quid as if it's nothing - it sounds like £10m is the latest "chump change" figure based on the Orban thread. But if we sacrifice a few million here and there for outgoings, and and pay the extra few million on incomings it quickly adds up.

Obviously this is all a symptom of poor squad management (or more accurately no squad vision) over the past 4 years. But I don't think writing off millions of pounds on multiple players is the way to fix that.
This all sounds great in theory but the reality is with wages and declining values over time it becomes clear we are winning the battle and not the war. Take Winks for instance - £10m was a good deal for him, but we could probably have sold him 2 years ago for £20-30m and saved his wages as well, but we wanted £40m. Hugo is on £100k a week so the risk is losing £5m to try to get £3m. There’s also the opportunity cost - time spent on Lloris is time we could be spending trying to shift others. If we can’t get that £3m quickly give him a free transfer and work on the next one.

i agree we shouldn’t be cancelling contracts except in extreme circumstances, but it’s quite clear we overvalue our deadwood and that is one of the reasons we can’t clear the space and wage bill as required

It was so obvious he was going to do it too.

A lot of ex players complain how the club treat them and I expect Hugo will be the same once he has left. He should be getting a testimonial but I bet he doesnt.
Which specific ex players are you referring to?

For all the frustrations with how the club has been run that’s one area I’ve not heard much about. The opposite really

It’s regularly mentioned on podcasts like the spurs show. Anderton springs to mind as one. There’s been plenty.

I would argue that winning the war is exactly what we get by not acting hastily in a situation like this. The objective should be managing the squad as a whole, not just trying to get Lloris out the door as quickly as possible to save on his wages. As fans we tend to live minute-by-minute with transfers, but I think the reality of any football club is very different.

The great advantage we have with Lloris is that the decision that he will not be part of the squad this year has already been made, so we have the option of paying off his contract or letting him leave on a free in our back pocket. As long as Hugo isn't kicking up a stink, there's no need to use those options yet.

We have multiple players that we want to move out, and if we start "taking the hit" on each of them we are going to run out of wiggle room with the finances. I agree that our valuations are generally too high and we need to take some hits in places - but that's exactly why the situation with Hugo is the perfect opportunity to hold out, because avoiding the hit on him can open the door to taking a hit on one of the others.

I highly doubt we are spending much time on Hugo's deal either. I don't think he is clogging up the system in any way.

Breaking | Hugo Lloris has blocked a move to Lazio, despite a fee agreement struck with Tottenham - Frenchman was not guaranteed a starting spot by the Serie A side so has called the deal off. More follows. (L’Équipe)

It’s not really a surprise. He was never going to be second choice somewhere. It’s probably why he was back training with the group on Thursday.

I will be on my own but I still feel he has a part to play here
Both parties want the sale, but if it doesn't happen then I've no doubt he will be re-integrated into the squad and will play some part in our season. No idea what that means re pecking order; I doubt he'd be considered No 1, but I'm sure he'd rather be No 2 here than No 2 at Lazio, or any other mid-ranking European club.

No return, time to go, i think he has made it clear. if he can't find another club i expect his contract to be terminated.

I could see that at start of summer, but club shouldn't countenance that with both Forster and Whiteman injured and you'd hope Hugo would be willing to help out in that scenario (after all what's the hurry for him in that situation?)

I'd like to be educated as to who they are because I've never seen any ex-players complain about how they've been treated after they've left the club, yet I've seen plenty of players that we've looked after.

I don't remember anything about Shaggy having an issue but even if he did, how long ago was that?
Was it even in Levy's tenure?

IIRC Jenas found out he was surplus to requirements when his key card to enter the training facilities was denied and Ledley was sent out to tell him.
