He runs around a lot and tries hard for sure.
Gets a yellow and then he's on a tightrope.
He does this about 10 times a season.

There are three players who’s heads never drop and intensity never drops in the team. Hojberg, Aurier and Lamela those are the guys Jose would like in the trenches when the fixtures pile up. These three have great mentalities, sometimes their tenacity is a negative but their energy and attitude is infectious.

Never been sent off.
That's smart

Some would argue the smart thing would be to not get booked. The issue with players like Lamela on a yellow is it robs them of their aggression and intensity and let's face it, that's pretty much all he has.

I think it’s unfair to say that’s pretty much all he has. He generally attacks well, defends well, passes well and reads the game well. He’s a solid all rounder without being outstanding at anything (accept for intensity and aggression as you rightly pointed out)

A fit Coco is a player knocking on the door of the 1st team, An option that Jose has used effectively frequently

I suspect many have been blinded by his commitment to the team and the effort he puts in when he does play. I see a wholehearted player who gives of his best but continually runs into blind alleys and fails to release the ball early enough on far too many occasions.

I’ve never been his biggest fan (quite the opposite) but I definitely see the merits of having him in the squad. In recent games where we’ve looked to close out the oppo his work rate, tenacity and pressing ability would be invaluable coming off the bench. That extra energy in the last 20 is perfect for our set up and is something Lucas and Lamela offer over Bale and Dele for example.

We’re going to need everyone if we continue to challenge on all fronts and Lamela has already proved to be a valuable part of our success. I just hope he can get fit and stay fit as I fully expect him to start up at Stoke and in games over the Festive period.

You can put Poch and Mourinho in the list of people who are blinded by his commitment as when he’s fully fit he’s either been in the starting lineup or the match day squad.

I agree that I'm generally unfair when it comes to Lamela!

I agree he's smarter than he looks. Not smart enough to stay fit though. I accept he may be extremely unlucky but I've had enough.

What does that require, some sort of A level, degree/PHD, some sort of doctorate?
