Winks is a superb pivot with a big future, and Sissoko has become a formidable box to box water carrier. But I still think you need an out and out DM/destroyer in your team. With Wanyama looking more an more unlikely to return, Dier is our only real option for that role.

I don't think any of them are the answer long term.

Is he worth keeping for that though? I'm guessing he's worth a fair bit..
I've never rated him as high as many Spurs fans tbh, so for me no. He was deserving his starting birth because we had no one better when Dembele was out, but Sissokko has without doubt in my mind surpassed him in pretty much all aspects of the game.

If he can cut out the hospital pass a game he would be worth keeping around. At the top level, we just can't afford to give away a pass at the halfway line like he does once a game.

No way is he first choice anymore after the way Winks and Sissokko are playing together. Will be interesting to see how Poch plays this out when he's back.
Nope but squads need players like him in it.

I still maintain he’s position is a CB and should be moved back into that role.

It’s one of the reasons if Toby left I think we wouldn’t have to replace him.

This. CM is still the spot most in need of upgrading in the Summer.its just that Dier has dropped back in the list imo

The idea of selling Dier for a good fee and replacing him with specialist player(s) (destroyer, playmaker) maybe isn't so bad.

Makes no sense to "disagree" that Dier is the better choice defensively. It's like "disagreeing" that the sun is slightly warmer, and rain is slightly wetter.

Selling Dier is a very awkward suggestion.

I think Dier will have his day, but right now there isn’t an obvious place for him. With a 3 man defence there are four defenders who are more suited, and you can’t have deep lying central midfielders in that system as you end up being pegged back, but in a 4231 he’s probably a victim of de vends deterioration as Dembele’s elegance on the ball allowed Dier to be just a ball winner. Sissoko and Winks have shown that they can operate as a double pivot in both systems as the both have very good all round games and are mobile, athletic players.

Dier’s best bet to be a first choice again, in my opinion, would be either to commit to central defence, as we have two ageing centre backs and with his pace, passing ability and power he has the tools, or to hope that Pochettino switches to a 433 and he could play as a pure deep lying anchorman. Even then, I’m not sure Pochettino would want that ahead of Winks, who has enough bite and work rate to do the role but is far more able to start an attack.

One thing I would be interested in is Dier as a pure DM in a 2 with Winks (assuming no 3 man defence) so that Winks could have more licence to burst forward, but for now I wouldn’t mess with the Sissoko- Winks combo fitness permitting,

He doesn't want to play there, it's why there was so much chat of him leaving a couple of Summers ago.

I think Dier needed this, he's been coasting for the past 2 seasons in my opinion and I think he will benefit from having to fight for his spot.

Declan Rice choosing England is also very bad news for him internationally. He’s got to think very carefully about moving back to defence, IMO.

That's not what I was disagreeing with, if that was aimed at me.

Then his career will go down the pan and end up at a lower club imo

He’s lost the ability to get around the pitch as he’s grown bigger over the past 2 years.

Part of me wonders whether he might be somebody we would be looking to cash in on in the summer. Can’t see him getting a look in too much for the rest of the season.

Don't be silly. Dier is the type of player you need in the team squad, he can play a number of positions as well. Still IMO he makes the 4231 formation system much more fluid...plus competition is good to have.

Might not be so awkward in the summer. I'm not saying we should desperately dump him but he is a difficult one to fit in. I don't think he is a player that happily sits at the sidelines to be back-up.

Interesting time for him, imo he is the 5 best centre back (after Toby Verts, Sanchez and Foyth now), and Sissoko and Winks are better options in the midfield. I have never been a great fan (feel he makes too many mistakes, slows the play down and seems slower getting around this season), but crazy to think Sissoko has surpassed him in pretty much every aspect in the midfield enforcer role (his stronger, more powerful, better engine, more mobile and faster), credit Sissoko for his rise. Still think Dier has a place in the squad, and its a long season and we need 22 players.

I agree to a point. Utility players are great and certainly needed in any squad. The point I was making, and reason I bumped the thread was because up until Christmas he was pretty much a nailed on starter at CM. I can't see that being the case now.

Looking at how much he's played under Poch should make it easy to deduce that he'll still play a big role for us when he's back to full fitness. He's been a hugely influential player for us for years and I just think it's strange how easily some people are willing to discard him.
