I considered this but I think the fact one of the 'injuries' was an appendectomy suggests just bad luck.

The club is never open and honest when it comes to injuries. Look at Lamela, disappeared off the face of the Earth for the best part of a year before the club confirmed he was broken, then Rose with his knee niggle which turned out to be serious, next up Wanyama... took forever before we knew his injury was also serious.

In saying that players at some point or another are prone to breaking, Kane with his dodgy ankles, both Toby and Verts with recurring problems.

I think the cloud surrounding Dier is when he has played this season he’s been very poor for both club and country and given his ‘push’ for a move to Manure a couple of seasons ago the conspiracy theories won’t go away.

Dier can’t be far off he was running outside at last CL training. I’d expect him back for Brighton if not this weekend.

No. The cloud is idiots making shit up with absolutely no evidence to back it up to suit whatever agenda or conspiracy they're pushing at the time. It was the same with the garbage surrounding Lamela a couple of years back. I don't get why people have such a fascination with filling in the gaps of their knowledge with fabricated nonsense. On an extreme scale, that's how we get the moronic anti-vaxxers and flat earthers.

Conspiracies are almost always bullshit, and it's no different here. He's been injured and sick. There's nothing more to it.

When he picked up his latest injury playing for England poch said 2 weeks and out that it was a small problem, it’s been 4 weeks and there’s no sign he’s back ready to play. I bet we don’t see him again this season. He’s probably hurt himself and they are waiting to see if he needs an operation or not. That’s how these things usually go when there is so much silence and ambiguity around an injury.

Makes you wonder whether an injury was the real reason for his prolonged absence. Perhaps the gossip was true?

Definitely wasn't his game, but it would be harsh to criticize him considering that he barely played this season and is after injury. I'm just glad that we have another option in midfield. We will still need him this season.

Thats true. Cant really criticise a player just back from injury playing against a team like city. Having said that though he is going to be hard pushed from here on by both wanyama and sissoko as well as winks when hes back.

I was glad to see Dier back in the team today. I do think we look a more solid side with him on the pitch. Might be just me but we seem to concede less chances when he is playing and he a leader on the pitch too.

Limited footballer but a great character to have around and provides cover at CB. As cutthroat as it may sound I'd be looking to upgrade. I think his hype outweighs his actual output on the pitch and we'd probably get in a suitable replacement for a lot less than he'd sell for.

At 25 there's still room for improvement and hes certainly not reached his peak, but I think most would agree that he hasn't really kicked on much in the last couple of years, I don't think Poch playing him regardless of form helped his development much either, he just seemed to stagnate and become too comfortable.

Dier's best season with Spurs was in 2015/2016 where he was first thrust as a DM. People actually questioned Poch at that time, wondering how a defender could play in a DM role. With that, the expectations were very low for Dier to excel in that position. He performed admirably with the low expectations, but when Wanyama came in the next season, he proved to be the better, tougher and more skilful DM than Dier. Thats when things started going downhill for him. This season, with his injuries and the emergence of Winks and Sissoko, his limitations and overhyped persona seem to be magnified even more.

I'd keep him though, as he is a good squad player to have, with his versatility to play in more than 1 position, but nothing more than that.

Agree. Just need him to get back to full fitness levels.

He’s not a first teamer but is still a useful player for some games. There are a lot of other players / positions that need replacing ahead of Dier.

I think he needs to spend a bit more time in the gym - lose some weight, put on more muscle and maybe gain a bit of pace.

The flak this guy gets is ridiculous.

Has nobody managed to identify that the season during which we’ve been more porous and had the least control of games has been the season where Dier has been by and large injured?

The guy is a leader and a player who does all the simple things at a very high level. I’m not saying he should be an automatic starter, but he is certainly a player we are better with than without.

I’m Not Eric’s biggest fan of late but yesterday was his first game back from a long time out and feel we need to cut him some slack.
We should not be too critical of he has given good service over the years and need our support not vitriol.

Moreso Wanyama IMO.

I think it’s time the player himself realises that he’s not going to make it as a DM, he’s played enough games now to have learnt a lot about playing at CB. If he really applied himself to that position, he’s a natural replacement for Toby - and I think that’s what Poch has always hoped for him. It’s up to him now to cement that role in his mind, cos he could be starter for us and for England for the next 6 years, he won’t do that in DM.
