He was excellent, and if we were a back 4 team I think he could be outstanding. So frustrating though that he overhit an unmarked Son shortly after the goal that could have won it. If he had that cross in his locker he could be a really top WB

Didn't he say recently that he's been working hard to learn the position, as its new to him.
Hopefully yesterday is the start of that hard work paying off because apart from a couple of moments, it was a bloody good performance from him.

New country, new language, new manager and new position.

That's why I don't like writing players off too soon. He may well not quite reach the limits we need but he seems like a decent lad and is working hard to improve, so it wouldn't be a bad thing to stick with him for a little longer.

Same with Sess on the other side in my opinion. They both have their flaws, confidence for Sess and delivery for Royal but they are improving on these things.

I've been critical of him, but yesterday was a competent display. Not world beating, but the bare minimum of what we'd expect from him. Given that his remit for the game was to be more defensive this suited his skillset. Did the simple things well, and got his positioning right.

MOTM, for a competent display and his best wearing our shirt, just above Davies who was also great.

He had a much better game and fair play to him for that. Was really good defensively and a bit better in build up too.

But....

He just cannot cross a ball. At 1-0 he had the easiest chance to square for Son which would have been 2-0 and he overhit the cross massively and the chance was gone. It wasn't a difficult pass, he had the momentum as his touch was good. All he had to do was lay the ball across with a low ball and we were 2-0 up.

At the end of the day as a wing back you've got to be able to make those opportunities count and he just doesn't have the quality offensively.

I’d go a bit more than competent, mainly because of the comparison to what he’s served up before!
Proved he can defend against Diaz, apart from his goal of course, probably the top performer in the league in his position at the moment.
Agree he’s still lacking in what we need going forward but he’s at least shown he’s not the complete waste of space we all thought he was, for the time being anyway!!!

It was probably his best game but the glaring deficiencies were obvious. That cross he totally messed up when son and sess were in the box was shocking

Not sure if Son actually was offside, but during the play he did look it, and I belive that's what Emerson thought as well. So he most likely didn't over hit the cross but aimed for Ryan at the far post.

Son had several moments during the game when he looked too eager and ran slightly ahead of the defenders, so I don't think we should blame Emerson for that one.

In general though, I agree his delivery has to be better.

Took a couple of needless touches on balls that were going out of play too, giving possession back to Liverpool and corners (I think, I was very drunk!).
That may be because he didn't get a shout, didn't hear/understand it, or just panicked but it did annoy me at the time.

It was a vastly improved performance and for that he deserves great credit but it was still far from perfect imo.

If he keeps this up will he play his way into staying at the club?

I still think we need to upgrade but it won’t be easy to find a player that matches his physical attributes plus defensive qualities and also had significantly better attacking skills.

what impresses me most is his stamina, he’s always supporting attacks snd always back in defence, reminds me a bit of walker in that way (though without the elite pace)

I wasn't comparing his previous performances (which have ranged from pathetic to amateur) with his performance against Liverpool. I was plotting him against what someone would rightly expect to be the bare minimum from someone in that position, in our club, playing in the Premier League... against Liverpool he ticked all the boxes of the very small list of things he was asked to do. As I said, it wasn't world beating, but competent. I'll give him MOTM for the uptick on the dirt he's dished out previously.

He seems a really likeable chap who I’d like to make it at Spurs, but for all his good work in the game that cross highlights the problem.

If the delivery was decent, we win the game.

Unfortunately, repeat that situation a few times during the season, and it could mean the difference between honours or not in dropped points!

Which is the only reason you'd take Walker over numerous other options. Look he had a good game on Saturday, a really good game in fact, but that's all it was. One good game.

We all wanted it to be a success for both Emerson and the club but it hasn't been. I'm sure he will move on in the Summer and have a decent career as a full back, but he's far from the wing back we require in order to move forward. As we've seen with Doherty WB and RB are almost different positions and the skillsets required to succeed in both are not exactly interchangeable. Doc looks a good WB and a poor full back, Emerson almost the opposite.

Didn’t you say we’d already lined up the rwb for the summer? If that’s the case it would be unlikely we’d keep all three, and given that MD can play rwb and has a lower sell on price, Royal will surely be off.

I reckon we’ll loan him out this summer. We need a new RWB but I’m not convinced we’ll be willing to crystallise a loss on Royal just yet.
