This reminds me of a similar situation in 2015… we wanted to buy Berahino from WBA for 15m but they wouldn’t budge off of their 25m valuation. We eventually gave up and bought some lad from Leverkusen. Berahino was just released from a League 1 side and the guy we bought turned out okay. Sometimes you just have to move on.

I don’t. Often the simplest solution is the most likely.

We’re well advanced with Spence, but at a bit of an impasse, and neither side, even though they think they’ll get there, wants to show weakness. There’s a deadline of sorts with the Korean trip upcoming, and it’ll get get done shortly.

As for Lenglet, it’s nearly there but again, the last few bits are taking longer than hoped and maybe there are a few other situations we’ve looked at which have given us cause for delay. Looks like they won’t happen (ie Brehmer) so we’ll sort it in the next few days.

Otherwise, because arguably neither the other CB or the creative mid are fundamental to our success - ie if they ended up being squad players, we’d still be in a great position for the upcoming season - we can take our time and decide whether the right player at the right price comes available. If not, no worries.

I think this is far more likely than some ‘quiet period because something major is brewing’. Come off it.

People seem to be having a hard time getting their head around this because (1) we’ve raised cash so they seem to think we have to spend every penny possible (2) they’re like pigs in shit with new players and need a fix every day and (3) they’ve created a world where a adding (for example) Paqueta and Brehmer to the side makes us the best team ever and they’re already attached to the notion.

While getting those sorts of players would be great, honestly I think if we land Spence and Lenglet, that represents an unbelievable summer’s work. Maybe not 10 out of 10 but really strong. And anyone that thinks otherwise isn’t contextualising what we’ve done IMO
I think the stress is Conte clearly wanted it all done before the Korea trip and if we believe what we have been told by ITK and the Media we are 2 players light going into the tour

Drop 60m on Hakimi and call it quits.

Ive not really bothered with this transfer because I thought this would be done quite easily. Complacency even though not like I could affect anything.

I owuld have liked a RWB by now too as I saw that as a real priority signing above all else. It isnt like there are many RWBs out there, andwe also have the homegrown quote etc.

PSG literally signed him for £60m last summer, why do you think they will suddenly sell their starting RB for no profit?

I’m amazed this has dragged on so long. He’s a player with potential but he’s still very raw (i.e. Sess).

It’s hard to imagine Conte wants him that bad.

My feeling is he struggles to usurp Doherty this season if signed.

I agree... he's definitely one for the future. He would be eased in I'd imagine.

With the way this Gibson dude has been operating, it wouldn't be surprising if he waits right up to the final minute of the deadline to say "yeah, okay, let's do it".

He can do that, but we will have a new RWB by then, whilst he will have an unhappy player and an empty pocket...

That's when we bid 5mil just to help them out by taking him off their hands.

I think we have all seen the improvement in players once they have spent significant time on the training pitch with Conte. Signing a RWB at the end of the window will mean they take 3 months to become an optimal player in Conte's system (as there will be a lot less team shape work once the season has started). I hope the fact Paratici usually has 3 or 4 players lined up before pulling the trigger is true for the RWB position and we can move on quickly if we are not prepared to pay is needed to get Spence.

Also, let's not forget Paratici’s mentality in negotiations. “I learned an important rule: if you like a player and you consider him important, you can pay a little more than the market price because you have to buy this guy. This can only happen if you are convinced of the player’s skills and potential. If you see a top talent and are sure of him, you cannot lose him for a few million: pay and move on."

Maybe Conte has had a close look at Tanganga and has thought, with him being HG too, that he can understudy Doherty.
