Because we do not need a new right back. Walker is top level and Naughton is more than adequate cover. The fact we are loaning him straight out proves he's not initially a playing signing.

Get that, but that still doesn't mean he's only signed for commercial reasons. Your post contradicted itself. As it is, Naughton wants garuanteed playing time and is likely to be sold once yedlin gets into the first team fold. He might not be playing initially but he is pretty much as close as we can get for a like for like replacement of walker for cups/injuries/rest. The commerciality is just an added bonus

Was Eric Dier a signing for only commercial reasons?

I think once he gets here we will need to be very patient with him. It's going to be quite a big jump in level of quality week in week out than he's used to. I doubt he will be able to hit the ground running but hopefully I'm wrong.

He did play in the World Cup. Plus he seems to have the physical attributes to do well.....for the suggested fee I would say he is definitely worth it.

Naughton doesn't want to be just "cover" though so he's probably leaving this window.

JJ just tweeted "USA! USA! USA!", which I suspect is related to firm news for the American Bongani Khumalo Yedlin.

I think this is a good signing at the reported fee. Sure he needs to prove he can cut it in the prem but just because he's played at a lower league standard doesn't mean he isn't capable. He performed well on the international stage during the summer and has potential to play in a more advanced role so could turn out to be a longterm replacement for Lennon rather than just walkers backup. Christ we'd have some pace options at the club with Lennon, walker, Townsend and yedlin!

Yep. I don't know how much money we'll get for Naughton, but I'm sure we'll make a nice profit. That said, though, Naughton is home grown..

Soldado needs to prove he can cut it in the Premier League, Lamela needs to prove he can cut it in the Premier League, Chiriches needs to prove he can cut it in the Premier League, Chadli needs to prove he can cut it in the Premier League, in fact every signing every club makes from a lower league outside the Premier League needs to prove they can cut it in the Premier League.

If you think he has the potential to be a top level FB, why do you also think he's only being signed for commercial reasons?

And he's poor. I'd say they tried to cover all bases. The guy isn't poor at all, he has shown at the highest level, higher that Tottenham that he can more than hold his own, indeed he can catch they eye.
