If it’s the Sanchez we saw today, then yes, as I have no idea where this performance came from. Was like a completely different player with his positional awareness and calmness, didn’t get sucked up the pitch unnecessarily either, and played many progressive passes accurately on the ground and in the air. There’s a reason he’s someone with retaining value and interest from other clubs, and I’m talking about the qualities he didn’t even show today like recovery pace and athleticism. But can he retain it over a whole season and will he even be here to have a chance to do so? I guess we’ll see. Would still probably have to sell him if there’s a chance of bringing in a better CB to partner Romero, as his and Sanchez’s styles clash a bit.

not an expert on Romero, what parts of their styles clash please?

Both prefer to press up closer to defenders and engage in ground and aerial duels, breaking the defensive line to try to win the ball ahead of the attacker. Normally, I’d say as a pair they’re a bit too aggressive. Although, today Sanchez was doing very much the opposite; he was sitting deeper, sweeping up second balls, and playing the primary ball handler role between him and Dier. I wish I watched more of him in the Copa to see if he did the same next to Mina, but I’ll catch up on that later.

As i said on this thread during the Copa, he did! Sanchez was a completely different player for his national team. I prefer him over Dier all day long

That’s great to hear. Sanchez at his peak is our best CB bar Romero; if he is still here after the window closes and performs like he did today, I can really get behind him as a consistent member of the defence. Consistent is also what he needs to be in a Tottenham shirt though for it to happen. No doubt there’s a player there though.

I was reading up on some of his statistics and he is a strange one. Romero had more defensive pressures in the midfield than his own defensive third (while playing in the center of a back three). Romero is also in the 99th percentile in pressures, tackles, and interceptions.

He is highly aggressive and is very successful at it. I do wonder how different his role will be under Nuno, but for now, he looks like an exciting player for the present and future of Tottenham.

The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare has revealed that Tottenham’s newest recruit, Cristian Romero is already past the rehabilitation stage after picking up an injury during the Copa America.

Romero signed for Spurs last week on an initial loan deal from Atalanta, with the North London club having the option to make the deal permanent for a £42.5m.

The 23-year-old’s addition comes as a welcome boost to the North London club, whose backline came in for plenty of criticism last season.

Nuno Espirito Santo confirmed after Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Arsenal in their final pre-season match on Sunday that Romero had picked up a knee problem in the Copa America final.

The Spurs boss also added that he is in no rush to integrate the centre-back into training.

However, Eccleshare has now provided a positive update on the Argentina international by revealing that he has already completed his rehabilitation.

The journalist did not say when Spurs fans can expect Romero to feature, simply stating that ‘it won’t be too long’ before the defender makes his debut
