The first challenge is never a booking. The ref was from Italy. I wonder if he’d had any previous run ins with Romero?

In a team where Dier and Sanchez is the options, Romero comes of as an "better" option. He's not been that great as many would like him to be but he has potential to become better under Conte regime.
New club, new country etc. for Romero. Imagine if the likes of Dier, Sanchez and Davies went the other way! They'd be much shitter!

He was always going to get a red card sooner or later given his style of play.

It put us in a bit of a mess last night and meant a lot of players will be extra tired on Sunday, but still hugely preferable to him getting sent off a league game.

Hopefully Conte will give him an earful and he'll learn from it.

Didn't Sanchez play central with Vertonghen to the left and Alderweireld right under Poch? I can see that as the way going forward until we sign replacements. Romero and Dier are comfortable to carry the ball out from the back. Sanchez is good for recovering. So with the personnel we have it would Dier, Sanchez and Romero in the 3.

Disagree - I think hes not just a 'better' option he is a very good player in his own right. Best defender in Serie A last year. Class for Argentina. He is very very good. The thing is he has to play next to Dier which is not good for anyone.

I am no making any excuses for him. It was a stupid second yellow, the first was very harsh IMO, but doesn't matter - he was on a yellow and should have stopped being so aggressive. But he is an outstanding CB, especially in a back 3, and he is so much better than our other CBs.

Anyone who cannot see how good Romero is needs to watch a different sport. I have not been this excited about a CB since watching Ledley King make his debut. The guy has its all, good in the air, great anticipation, aggression, and so strong in the tackle. Once he becomes accustomed to the PL he will be one of the top 3 defenders in the world IMO. Yes his a little rash at times and sometimes his positioning is not great but his finding his feet and now playing under a second manager in the space of 4 months. Conte will help him massively.

Still prefer Sanchez Romero Rodon, but maybe Romero Sanchez Rodon could work

Ledley started his career with us as a midfielder

Good to see Cuti in today's training photos, I thought he might've broken a rib or something, the way he landed on the other guy's leg/foot (if it all wasn't just a ruse to try and get out of the 2nd yellow, as if that's ever actually worked in the history of football).

Romero's been very good for us so far, but yesterday he was far too aggressive when defending and the challenge that ended up with the red card was ridiculous. I have no doubt he'll improve under Conte, but yesterday showed he still has much to learn.

You want him to curb his aggression and calm down a bit but at the same time, these things are what also make him great. If it’s even possible to alter these defensive traits, you really don’t want to get rid of what makes him special. A balance has to be struck, but he’s clearly borderline world class already as seen since the start of last season both with club and country.

From what I have been able to find on Romero he appears to have played the majority of his time at Atalanta in the centre of the back 3.

If so I wonder if we will go back for Kounde on the right side of the back 3
