In certain games could see us starting with Vinicius up top with kane and Son being the other 2 forwards, certainly would give us more of a goal threat.
Spot on - look back over Sons first three seasons and you'll find plenty of posters complaining about him. Vinicius looks determined to give his all, time will tell if his all is good enough in the Prem.

It looks like Vinicius is already going down the route of being one of those players (Lamela) that are too polarising for anyone to say anything sane about.

He's had some nice touches and some not so nice touches, but it is way, way too early to say whether he's going to be good or not. If West Brom on Sunday was Son's first game, everyone would be writing him off and trying to sell him at the first opportunity. On the other hand, it is a wild stretch to try to argue that Vinicius's presence possibly distracting their defenders is any indication of his ability or likelihood to be a success.

Hopefully in the next few months we'll get more of a sense of how Vinicius might fit into the team, be that as a lone striker rotating with Kane, a last minute super-sub, playing alongside our other attackers in a Firmino-type role, or (hopefully not) in a Soldado-type role on the bench.
In a paper line up Kane is the lone striker but he never plays that role. He is always interchanging with Sonny, Lucas,Lamela, whoever. That’s the role Vinicius has to adapt to and that won’t come over night.Give him time. There are some very positive signs about his play.

We said that about Jansen. But in all seriousness he does look to have something about him, he wont be prolific but im sure he’ll bag a few when needed.
Comparing him to Jansen is outrageous though. Hes already shown more, in my opinion, than Jansen ever did for us. The Europa game where he got a couple of assists are promising

Vinicius has gotten into decent positions and has fired shots away from decent positions in all his games (bar that Antwerp game) so far. That suggests that goals will come. The problem with Janssen was that he wasn't able to get shots away at all. Which was why the "he only needs a goal, and then he'll be on fire" line was always a fallacy with him.

If thicc Vince had been doing a Sterling (missing an open goal twice per game), then you could make more of a case that he was moving correctly, shaking defenders off and was just unlucky.

The fact that some people seem worried about him not scoring yet is worrying. Firstly, he hasn't had too many minutes.

Secondly, he is unlikely to score more than 10 goals a season considering his role in the team, and 10 goals would be a good outcome. Some people were asking for 15 goals second striker, which would, frankly, be an exceptionally good outcome and very unlikely.

Thirdly, what is important is does he help us win, not how many goals did he score. He was crucial in helping us win the other weak, and in the europa a few weeks before. If he contributes the same as he did in those two games, I frankly don't care if he ever scores for us.

With more goals coming out wide in modern football, there is a lot less emphasis on strikers scoring, back in the 4-4-2 days you needed good totals from two strikers, as it would be rare for even the most prolific wingers to get more than 10 a season. Times have changed and widemen probably score more goals in most teams than central strikers (though it is two against one). A central strikers role is increasingly to help the ball stick up top, to hold up the ball, to play in other players etc. etc. You don't really get many out and out finishers anymore for a reason.

I mean it's a bit like that Llorente thing, some people think he was crap, I assume because he didn't score many goals, and that he started very slowly. But in 2018/2019 he was crucial not just for our champions league run, but for finishing in the top 4. He allowed us to play another way and gave us a new dimension. Llorente's best work for us wasn't in the box, but holding the ball and bringing others into play. If you can get the ball to 'stick' up top your life becomes much easier.

I do have some worries about Vinicius, he seems to make runs too early and too often, probably just eagerness, I also don't know how good he truly will be. But, he seems good enough to fulfil the role, and has already improved us.

I wiki'd Vinicius earlier today when he was first linked. First thoughts were that this would be an underwhelming signing. He's done nothing of note prior to last season. He wasn't even a striker until quite recently. Was previously a central defender and then a defensive midfielder.

But then I also saw that he didn't make his professional debut until 2017, by which time he was already 22. And that actually made me more interested. It suggests that there is a flame burning strong within. To keep plugging away and believing in yourself when no-one else does takes a special kind of character. Whatever his technical ability, I would bet good money that his mentality will never be anything other than first class. He will be determined to make the very most of himself and of this belated opportunity. He will never take it for granted.

Yep...quoting myself. I know. Weird.

But in light of yesterday's superb interview, I think the above is relevant.

i never followed this transfer but can someone explain how we got him on loan?

benfica bought him for 17m only last year, a decent amount of money for them. he then proceeded to score a pretty impressive 18 in 33(24 in 49 overall) but then they pack him off on loan? why? i know we paid a loan fee, but still.

Looks like once he bags one he'll be fine.

I still think these sort of comments are badly missing the point of signing this guy. We don't need goals from him a such, we need someone to replace Harry Kane and enable our other forwards to continue to produce and also to play alongside Harry Kane and occupy defenders to free him up. If he gets a few goals along the way then happy days. Last season when Kane was out we had to shift players around the pitch to accommodate which made us weaker. Not an issue anymore.

Because Benfica is out of $$ as they didn't get into the champions league and COVID impacted their budgets too so they had to sell.

Plus, wasn't it mentioned that they have a new-ish coach who has his favourites, along with a certain style of play and Vini was deemed expendable to him?
I think maybe @rossdapep said something along those lines, although I could be completely wrong?!

Mourinho & Mendes connection paying dividends. Also, according to a couple Benfica fans, Levy managed to re-negotiate Gedson's buyout to a lower price while he was in talks with Benfica about Vinicius. :ROFLMAO:

I’m just glad to have someone who has good hold up skills and can lead the line in place of Kane.

I’m sure goals will come but he’s not played much for us yet but still has provided a good option as cover and also an extra striker when we are chasing a goal late game.

That's it. The new coach prefers strikers who can play in the channels and they signed Darwin Nunez (who has been very good so far) plus they have numerous wide players now, therefore he was very much not required. Benfica pulled out all the stops to bring in Jorge Jesus so whilst they probably would rather have kept Vinicius, as he was highly rated at the club, it made more sense for them to sell or loan to keep his value high.

Finishing a tad wayward at times, but he seems to have the lot. 35m for him might be a bargain if he continues to develop.
