Surpised by some of the analysis.

Ive never been that convinced previously, but he really impressed me on Sunday.

Ok, there were a few occassions he could of done more but overall it was a very positive performance given the circumstamces.

He'll surely get better.

The issue we have is we had Kane up top and Son on the left for a long time. So now the left sided attacker needs to fill that void left by Son going central. The goals will be more spread now with the way we attack with more variety. However those wide attackers will need more goals. Kulusevski really should have scored against Villa and has 2 goals this season. Johnson looks to have goals in him so those for me are likely to be our 1st choice. Will Gil have enough end product to be a starter? He's a good cover option though especially with Soloman out.

First start of the season, has hardly had any game time prior and missed all of pre season with a long injury. On top of that he’s still learning the league. I honestly don’t know what more one could expect from any player under those circumstances. Looked very positive, clearly has a lot of technical ability, tried too hard to impress at times and needs to be more confident/clinical in the box. Maybe he makes it with us, maybe he doesn’t but taking into consideration everything I think it was a very good showing by the young lad and he certainly deserves more minutes before we can come to any conclusions about his future here. I must say I’m surprised some are so quick to write him off. Doesn’t mean he will succeed here but he has shown enough to be given more time to develop and impress imo. Young players often need patience + nurturing and we have never given Gil any since he joined.

Admittedly I only watched the first half yesterday, and I am not a big Bryan fan, but I thought he played well. Very active on and off the ball. Showed well for the ball on the wing, tracked back, and was involved in the box. He had a great cross that was just over Sonny’s head - but more of that kind of play will lead to goals/assists.

You must not have been in the Kulusevski or Vicario threads early on.

I think some people have already made their minds up. @Flobadob disagreed with my positive post and didn't even say why. This made me sad.
I’ve certainly made my mind up that he’s not our best LW option, that’s for sure. It’s a toss up choosing between him and Richy because they are both pretty ineffective in different ways but there’s no way I’d be starting him ahead of Johnson, Perisic or even Solomon. Personally I’m just not as impressed by tidy possession play. Pretty much all our players have improved to a good standard in that regard under Ange, what we need are wingers that can take on their man and provide consistent end product. Out of Gil, Perisic, Solomon, Richy and Johnson I can only really see Johnson being consistently good enough, the others are all deficient in one way or another.

When and if we start to see some consistent dangerous play in the final third from Gil I’ll start to come around to the idea of him playing a bigger part for us but as it stands I believe all we have from him is tidy possession play and a decent cross every now and then which granted would be very useful if Kane were still here but our current striker won’t likely make much from that kind of service, which would also render Perisic very ineffective unless we had Richy up front. To summarise, I don’t think he’s a bad player and I’ve said that in a previous post, I just don’t see anything particularly impressive in him and feel we’re going to need better both now and long term. The hopes I’ve seen from some of him becoming something along the lines of Bernardo Silva are incredibly far fetched. He’d need to be about twice as good technically and build some actual core strength, composure and a much higher football IQ to get anywhere near.

Fair assessment. I might quibble with what is needed from the wings under Ange's tactics, but not a hill to die on.

But I would add that replacing Bryan on the roster is pretty low on the priority list for me. We have 5-6 "must" replace for me, before we get to the "want" to replace.

I dont think he was positive enough, he went backwards far too much and one of these moments culminated in him playing a terribly short back pass which Vic had to smash clear and it led to the Villa fk from which they equalised.

I think he’s very talented I just don’t think he’s a wide player for Ange’s system in the PL.

Yeah I agree he’s not exactly a player we need to be rushing out of the door, not at all. I just don’t think he’s imminently going to be playing a big part for us, or should be personally. I would still put Johnson, Richy and Solomon ahead of him when fit.

What would you say you believe are more important criteria for an Ange winger?

Good question - I'm not sure I can answer it.

One more for you - If Ange could clone Johnson, would he play both at the same time on opposite wings?

My main gripe with Gil is that he's unpredictable even for his teammates and his technique on the ball is random at best. So many times our players are not ready for a random layoff of his and puts them under pressure. His wayward back pass also led to Villa's equalizer. His movement is great but I feel like he's lacking in the areas where his supposed strengths are.

This in the context of the transfer fee and his age (23 in a couple of months) is whats difficult to tally.

We spent over 20mil + lamela for a player whos had no impact on the team to date and i agree is unlikely to imminently, by the summer thats three years since we bought him. Thats not the type of invesment we really want to spend on 3rd/4th choice at any position.

Not all his fault of course given the management issues we've had but for that investment we would have hoped to have seen better return/development by now.

Just thought Bryan deserved a bump if only for his composure when he turned and fed Kulu from the edge of our box which started the move for our first goal. Doesn’t seem to have had enough of a mention in my opinion…
