One thing I am interested in Brentford bid - aren't they heavily rely on data on their scouting? Could be a good sign for me

Yeah they must be confident in him if they're willing to pay £40m

Brentford don't spend big money lightly.

Yes. Have stated previously from watching a lot of championship football I'm excited to see what Johnson can do for us. But given how well Brentford have recruited over the years and been lauded for their data model led approach I find it even more encouraging that he could be a very good signing for us (if we get it done).

From Sky Sports transfer centre.

Forest yet to receive Johnson bid from Spurs | Only offers in region of £50m to be considered.

Nottingham Forest have yet to receive a formal bid from Tottenham for forward Brennan Johnson.

Forest don’t want to sell and are likely to only consider offers in the region of £50m for the 22-year-old.

Forest rejected a £30m bid from Brentford earlier this window – the offer was described to Sky Sports News as “derisory and insulting” and dismissed out of hand.

They do not want to sell the Wales international having only signed a four-year deal with the club last summer.

If they found Brentford’s approach to be ‘derisory’ and ‘insulting’, can’t wait for them to meet Daniel

I can't see Levy offering much more than that tbh.

Hopefully, they really want Sanchez/Gil otherwise I think it's unlikely we meet their £50m valuation.

Tend to agree but it might be the structure of the deal they don't like. How much up front etc

That was a very good offer from Brentford and already way overpriced for Johnson yet they’ve rejected it.

That’s more money than Nico Williams release clause and we could also get Bakayoko for around £25m or so and he has a higher ceiling. Just walk away and sign a better alternative.

I’d love to know what data Brentford are looking at when it comes to Johnson because his stats pretty much across the board on Fbref are atrocious

They do have to want to come, too, of course

He scored 8 league goals for Forest last season and that's invaluable when you are looking to stay up. They've got Awoniyi up front who has started scoring but outside those two, not too sure they have too much of a goal threat so can understand why they'd be asking for top money in order to let him go.

Just caught up on all the information available and seeing people frame it one way or another and yet it's still the same as it was yesterday; nobody knows for certain who is driving the deal, nobody knows if Ange wants him vs Ange is accepting what is given. If you think Ange will answer in a way that will give you a definitive answer then you're ignoring that Ange may possibly cater his answer in relation to trying to protect a player.

Personally I don't see a situation where the name our manager put forward first to fill the hole we have was Brennan Johnson, that's just my opinion. I think it's perfectly reasonable to have concerns about a structural approach to recruitment, whether that's that Ange works with what he is given and Paratici and the Scouting team make the choices, whether they put forward things and he approves them or he leads with his demands and the rest of the structure work toward his specific requirements. So long as it's structured and agreed upon, anything that circumvents the process should be a cause for concern, whether it yields a great signing from time to time or not.

It's not unreasonable to be concerned, it's not unfounded given past events, it is unreasonable to think we know with any degree of certainty no matter which side of the debate you land. Thinking that Ali Gold saying he understands that Ange wants Johnson is as good as certainty is not good evidence to go on either.

It's a waste of time trying to argue one way or another, what's more important for us is; Is he who we are getting, What signs do we have that he can be the difference we need?
I'm equally unconvinced that Brennan Johnson is a player we should be prioritising right now.

However, a lot of us had similar concerns (transfer decision making + whether the players are good enough) around us signing Vicario & VDV instead of meeting the reportedly higher asking prices for Raya & Tapsoba. Vicario & VDV are looking good enough so far that I find it perfectly believable that they may actually have been Ange's first choices.

Likewise, Solomon was scrutinised due to being a free transfer. The fact that he did well at Fulham and is proven to be very capable of making an impact off the bench is overlooked by many fans, in favour of more expensive but no more (or less) proven options who we opted against - such as Anthony Gordon.

Also, it would be inconsistent to criticise our approach to transfers only for the players we don't rate highly. Maddison was linked to the club well before Ange was in the picture, so may well have been more of a "club signing" than anyone else. This hasn't been scrutinised in the same way, despite being a big money signing, because us fans wanted Maddison. Yet how much us fans want a player has no bearing on whether Ange wants them.

Phillips and Veliz seem to have been accepted as signings for the future, yet we have no way of knowing whether either of them was more or less of a "club signing" than Rodon, Clarke or Spence (who's signings have all been widely criticised).

Realistically, I think Ange has given the nod for all transfers so far and is at least content with every signing we've made (and is probably ecstatic about some).
