The big question marks are around United under van Gaal and Liverpool post Suarez, I suspect Arsenal will finish above both, but I can't see Spurs being in a position to take advantage of any slip ups; competing for sixth with Everton looks about right.

It's worth bearing in mind that this guy doesn't know his arse from his elbow. He predicted Liverpool to win the league the year that Man City having just bought Aguero and Toure won the league. Liverpool finished 6th.

He's very bias, and doesn't like Spurs all that much.

I think we might surprise people this year.

I think we are better than 7th L Arse will be better than Bindippers as poo have Europe Manuel would need to keep RVP and Rooney fit to achieve 3rd
The mid table looks like last season's finish with a few tweaks like Suderland
Mcnulty does not seem to be that good to me for someone in that position

Thing is, this is going to be one of the toughest seasons for us in a long while. Chelsea and Arsenal have strengthened massively; Man Utd have got a world class manager and some decent midfielders instead of a chump and a clown; Man City have bolstered their already title winning squad. Everton have retained their key loanees from last season and will continue to improve on that consistency. Liverpool are a bit of an unknown quantity now but can't be dismissed.

Having said that... We have a new manager, with a squad that remains largely the same but barely had the opportunity to really show it's true quality last season due to the upheaval throughout. With that bad vibe gone and replaced with a far more positive environment I'd hope for these players to start opening up to their full potential on the pitch, who for a lot of these aforementioned rivals, will be relatively unknown quantities. I expect it to feel like a virtually new set of players. But it'll be a while before these new training regimes translate to the pitch.

I see a big gap between 3rd and 4th opening up this season, and then a real dog fight for the top 6.

6th is my realistic expectation for this season. 7th would be a disappointment I'll concede, but with this level of competition at the top end of the table, it's going to be tough.

In the pre season thread I thought we would be 5-7th. Chelsea are definitely favourites but it's actually pretty tough to call after that.

The same as last year - we were going to take advantage of the teams slipping up - United under Moyes, Chelsea under Mourinho, Arsenal because we always believe we will pip them!

And guess what, we didn't... again ;-)

Anything above 6th would be an over-achievement this season, but the club have to aim for the top prize.

Its going to be hard but hopefully that will really drive us on. I'm so disappointed that we are starting this weekend without knowing our complete squad yet again for the umpteenth time as if we want to be in the mix for fourth we can't be losing at teams like West Ham. Its a real test as they love to beat us.

As for the season on the whole, I was saying yesterday that Ive heard a few preseason reviews and our name very rarely comes up. It seems we've been completely forgotten by most people which is a good thing as it keeps the pressure off.

I do think we are at a disadvantage yet again playing all our games on a sunday as we are always playing catch up on the other teams rather than being in the driving seat. Regardless of that, I think we will finish above Everton, Ive actually a feeling that they might be quite disappointing this season.

To be fair a Liverpool fan predicting them to only finish 4th is about as close as you'll get to a realistic prediction.

The thing that gets me is this. "It's been an excellent summer so far for manager Roberto Martinez and chairman Bill Kenwright." It's been an excellent summer for Everton in the sense that they haven't sold anyone they didn't want to sell, and they've permanently signed two of the three loan players who excelled for them last season. So in effect, it's been an excellent summer for them by standing still, whilst all the other teams from last season's top seven have improved through player signings and new managers (in our case we've improved by no longer employing Tim Sherwood.) I'd expect Everton to finish 7th this season.

Yeah, I think Everton will struggle. They've done a good deal in landing Lukaku, but what they're going to find hard going is that every team that comes up against them will be treating them like a "Top Four" side (whatever that means). They're not under that radar, this year. Everyone knows now what they're all about. I think they'll be comfortable but really, we should, at the very least, be finishing comfortably ahead of them.

McNumpty is a chump but I can understand why some pundits can see us finishing 7th given the competition at the top this season.

What reading that really goes to show is that the PL now has a "Big 7" and the rest are utter dross. Predicting Newcastle to finish 8th says it all really.

I hope we finish about seventh but really I hope we take some points off those teams that are above us this year. Though that said, doing so will go a long way to helping us finish above seventh...

Edit: Above 7th - not about!

The best indicators unfortunately are usually the bookmakers, it's very rare that they get it horribly wrong (although there are exceptions) at the moment all of them see us finishing 6th ahead of neverton and below Liverpool. I have to say I agree with that unfortunately.

You hope we finish seventh?

Seventh is a bare minimum... If we finish in seventh we've effectively finished in last place in the 'mini-league' that we now find ourselves in with Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton...

Arrgh, I meant above! Not about. Freudian slip maybe after decades of Spurs-based misery. I mean joy.
