English football has damaged England's chances. England have only won the World Cup once, so it can't simply be that there aren't enough English players getting a chance. If anything, the English game needs to stop being so precious and embrace some continental practice. England are so far behind it's almost impossible to catch up.
Quite the opposite.
The foreign invasion of the 90's (Cantona, Bergkamp, Zola etc) led to the kids bought up in those eras wanting to emulate them rather than Vinnie Jones, Cascarino, and Terry Hurlock.
The academies that were then started in the 2000's to replicate the foreign ones (Ajax, Sporting etc) are now starting to produce decent quality youngsters (Bale, Ramsey, Wilshere, Ox, Walcott, Sterling, Shaw, Barkley etc) and will carry on doing so.
After Heysel, this country fell a long way behind the rest of Europe and it was only the foreign 'invasion' that showed us how far we had to go.
