Abidal would be great. Need some experience to ensure the high line works.

Baines

Everton may be more receptive to the idea of selling to us than to Utd

Why?

Surely Everton see us as competition more than Utd.

Baines is much more likely to push for a move to Utd than us.

Utd will almost certainly offer more money than us.

Agreed, but i would say Leighton Baines for me too.
Really strong LB, will be England's 1st choice LB very soon, need to keep up HG quota. Will be expensive though and as such i don't see us spending the money on him.

Nothing against Baines and agree he'd be a quality signing.

Absolutely no idea how anyone came to the conclusion that Everton would rather deal with us than Utd though.

No i don't think they would either... and even IF they did, the price is likely to still be too high. let alone whether Baines is even interested in a move to us. It is not as if we have proven (yet) that we are a big step up from where he is now.

If anything he would probably relish staying further north, playing for a top club AND teaming back up with Moyes.

I don't see why BAE needs replacing. This season wasn't his best but he spent the first half of it out injured. AVB doesn't automatically give returning players a right to start so it was a bit stuttering for him but that doesnt make him a poor player. I think BAE needs a good pre-season to get fitness and form back and then go from there. Rose could give him some good competition this season

We just achieved our highest points tally and I don't think we need to replace BAE. I'd be nervous about replacing half a team that has just finished with 72 points. Three changes max for me. Continuity is important if we want to build on last year.

Totally agree, Left back is always a position that can be a bit exposed including by reason of the teams tactics as a whole and mistakes are highlighted. Over a season I don't think BAE does much wrong at all. We are getting a quite solid unit at the back and continuity is important. How many other teams in the Prem would those that want BAE out say have got a better LB?

Fabio Coentrao

This has to be the main choice for me.

Other option would probably be Filipe Luis - but I can't see him being cheap.

I think we have a real chance of landing Coentrao - not only is our manager Portuguese but Marcelo is going to be first choice in that position next season and so his game time will be very limited. Add to that Real need to sweeten us up if they want Bale next summer.

How much did BAE play there though? Must have been a third of games at most.

Fair point, but we've just gone 4th, 5th, 4th, 5th in the league and got to quarter final of Champions League with Benny as our main LB. 105 league appearances during that time. He's solid and I agree with other people that we'd be better spending the money elsewhere.

Anyone got an opinion on Gotoku Sakai of Stuttgart? I understand he plays RB and LB and is pretty much two-footed. Always buy him on FM and he's great. How good is he/does he have the potential to be in real life?

Lucas Digne would be my first-choice. 19 y o and with great potential. Fast and good with the ball.

Hang on to Benny and then see if Rose or Fryers can step up next season. Not a pressing position for me.

I wouldn't get rid of him, but I'd prefer to have someone else starting.

BAE isn't a bad player, but does stupid things - e.g. doing cryuff turns in & around the penalty area or booting it when an easy pass is on

You are ignoring the impact of a likely change in formation. If we move to 4-3-3 then we need our full backs to overlap and whatever you might feel about BAE that isn't his strength. In essence we need a left sided Kyle Walker. Strangely this may be positive for Rose, who looked poor defensively but strong going forward. I think AVB will see how both pan out in the formation in pre-season and if they don't work I can see one or both sold with the proceeds used for a replacement.
