Nabil Bentaleb opts for Algeria
25 January 2014, 07:14

Tottenham midfielder Nabil Bentaleb has accepted to play for Algeria, where his parents hail from, and will likely be called up for the Fennec Foxes friendly against Slovenia on March 5, sources from Algeria Football Federation confirmed on Friday.

The 19-year-old rising star was born in France and has represented the country in the junior category, with the U-19 team coach Willy Sagnol announcing last week his intention to include Bentaleb on his roster for upcoming matches.

A meeting between the player and an Algerian delegation including Bentaleb’s father and brother, the FA president Mohamed Raouraoua, coach Vahid Halilhodzic and others will hold in London on February 2 after which Bentaleb’s decision will be announced officially.

silly boy...he would be a shoo in for France in a few years
I have a suspicion that this may be a Benny like stand against France & it's social mess. I haven't heard that specifically in bentalebs case, but I do know how 'foreigners' (even French born ones) are treated by the general populace in France and why anyone who is of an foreign back ground would want to play for France is beyond me

My first thoughts were Bloody ACN. But good luck to him, international football will open up his eyes.

Here's to Algeria not qualifying for the ACN for the next decade (...well we can hope).

Fucking African nations

At least we'll probably get a few million Algerian supporters.

Not sure what the dislike was for DoubleO. Do you want to lose a good player for a month every 2 years or don't you want to gain supporters in Algeria?

People should not be annoyed by ACN per say , its an accredited FIFA tournament and I dislike reading comments about the competition.

The scheduling is what one should be annoyed with imo not the players or the ACN. ACN is highly appreciated and enjoyed in Africa.

It is the scheduling that we're annoyed about not any of the countries taking part.

Fingers crossed for him that he gets a good couple of friendlies under his belt and makes it to the World Cup.

He might come up against Moussa in midfield vs Belgium :)

Algeria finished bottom of their group in the ACN last time and didn't make the one before so I can't see him being out for long in 2015...assuming Madrid haven't got him for £30m by then.

Stick the euros in the middle of the season and I'll hate that too.

The fact that it has FIFA in its name, or some people a very long way away like it has 0 effect on me.

While I agree with most of what you say. The fact that it is every 2 years, knocks it out of sink with international tournaments and slightly lowers it as a international competition. It also causes issues for clubs every 2 years, which imo has hindered the progress of African players and there football nations
