Missing Striker

I'll post this here as it is transfer related and where I think people will look for the answer to this question.

What I, and I think alot of people, want to know is who was the striker we just missed out on on deadline day?

I either expect that people do now know, or that it will soon be leaked. I just can't find a definitive answer anywhere on here yet.

The contenders:
Rob has stated he has heard Owen - other ITK's have seemingly mentioned Huntellar, while the press go with the likes of Heskey or Doyle, and we all know we were in for Arshavin.

So can anyone confirm for definite please? Was Levy's statement only referring to Arshavin, or did we have another lined up?

Personally I'm hoping Owen, and that we decide to get him in January (this would tie in with the Keegan fallout). And whilst yes, this info would be slightly masochistic in its nature, I wish to know so that we can all see what the Board was trying to do and also to give us an insight into what we might do in January.

Until then, I'm fully behind our current players. So, does anyone know for sure who it was?

Thanks

God I hope not, where was he linked, in the papers?

Yep agreed it could have been, and we were in for him, but was it Arshavin AND another, or just Arshavin?
We got the other...It was Pav.
Sevilla said the overpriced Capel when we wanted to sign him but he is not a forward. My guess is it was between Capel and Bentley...Anyway...We got the latter.
I doubt Heskey and Cole...there would have been an uproar imo...Started by ME if nobody else dared...remember to dare is to do!

Agreed that I don't think it was anyone as underwhelming as Cole/Doyle/Heskey.

I see what you're saying about Pav but what I mean is was it Arshavin and another we were after on deadline day, just Arshavin or just another...this is considering Pav was in the bag and we potentially knew Arshavin was off by then.

I think once we had Pav in we wanted two more to make a complement of 4 strikers - the Levy statement acknowledges they are a forward short of what they wanted. I therefore think if we had got Arshavin in they would still have been looking for another (turned out to be Campbell), but I also think that we were in for someone else (like Owen) and that if we had got that someone else we wouldn't have taken Campbell on loan.

Could have been Huntelaar if you read this article that HH jacked from somewhere i cant remember but the agent thing sounds like Arshavin.

ajax confirmed toady that they did turn down a couple of offers for Huntelaar on deadline day, but i would rule him out as i don't think he has the experience levy suggested. i would be more inclinced to think either heskey or owen, the latter of whom i would have been very happy about

I wonder whether the the emergece of Man City's cash slowed the market down Could it be possible that "star" players were advised to sit tight until Jan as they might get a more lucrative move ?

I reckon it was Arshavin Levy was talking about. You cant call a Uefa cup and a EURO championship finals not experienced.

I reckon it was Arshavin but i'm not sure we'll know for sure. I've heard it could have been

Arshavin
Huntelaar
Doyle
Heskey
Owen
Carlton Cole

If it was Heskey or Cole then I think it's just as well it didn't happen...

I think it was Arshavin, would tie in with Man City steaming into everyone's transfer business with bigger bids. AA's agent could have scuppered everything having been contacted by City last minute thus throwing everything into dissarray

Well i'm sure they said it was a top class striker. If it wasn't then we could have quiete easily pulled it off. And i would expect it was a long term target and the reason we ended up without a Berbatov replacemet, is because we wanted to get the right player. We weren't going to do another Rasiak deal on deadline day. So my guess is Arshavin. And my guess is, his agent wanted mre of the cut.

There was a report from Zenit saying that the club had offered money to the agent aswell as the transfer fee to Zenit. So this may have something to do with the deal. But we need to move on now and forget about it.

Owen could be a good shout come january. He'll be cheap and he wont be UEFA cup tied (if we're still in it.) But neither will Arshavin if Zenit dont enter the competition. so i'd prefer we go for Arshavin but failing that, get Owen on the cheap. Then get another top class striker next summer.

If you believe Zenit we played silly biggers over Arshavin by going quiet the week before the window closed and then made a last ditch attempt to sign in the final couple of days after Zenit hadn't caved in to our lower offer, so I'd say that he was our main target and for once Levy's great business brain couldn't take the piss out of a seller and we lost out.
