So the sudden increase in rumors must mean that United are not chasing him currently.

Have we made the requisite "Walking In Memphis" related joke? If so, please accept this post as one and move swiftly on.

Nothing to see here.

"Just walk it in, Memphis" was suggested as a chant early on :)

Ah, this player again.

Hmm.

He's a young, versatile, physically gifted winger from the Eredivisie. Primarily deployed as a left winger, he is most comfortable receiving the ball and cutting in on his preferred right foot. With flamboyant skill, pinpoint control, two-footed crossing, a powerful free-kick and fearsome shot in his repertoire, he embodies the prototypical modern inverted winger. He uses his pace well to break but also makes good use of his ample strength. Regarded as one of the best players on his team last season, most think he is ready to take the next step.

Wait. I was talking about our own Nacer Chadli circa 12 months ago. The one most have since seen to be one of the most frustrating and average signings in recent memory. Not Memphis Depay. I see a lot of congruency except that Depay is (and this works in his favor) almost four years younger and about £10m more expensive.

How many of us have actually watched Depay in depth outside of a couple WC cameos and maybe one or two PSV matches? I'll hold my hand up and admit I'm not one of them. What I have read from PSV supporters is that he isn't always the golden boy he was portrayed to be in the WC, he's inconsistent and turned in many average performances throughout the year. He did impress for LVG's Netherlands, and clearly showed enough during the season to be picked for the team, but then so did Chadli (before we bought him, he was arguably one of the worst Belgians at the WC)

My point is that before clamoring for this new, bedazzling left winger who will solve all of our problems, let's look past the hype and realize we may already have this player in our squad already.

Clever, but they're totally different players imo.

Reports in Holland saying we are close, we will make a bid this week after Depay made it clear he wants to join us.

I can't see how he is worth this price at all and how they would even expect that much

silly dutchies, how can we be close if we haven't made the bid yet?

That's how deals are done in football these days. The official offer is often the last thing that goes in.

A modern football transfer pretty much goes like this:

Club identifies target, or sometimes, player instructs agent to find him a new club

Club approches agent, or agents approach clubs

Agent gives goes back to players club advises of the other club's interest and establishes terms club would sell at. Its at this point normally where it is established whether its possible to do a deal.

Agents from both buying club and player discuss terms for the player, agents and 3rd parties. There may be other clubs interested too doing the same thing.

The player/his agent will choose their preferred offer and agree in principle to join that club based on the terms offered.

They will probably also inform their current club of this position and request to leave.

The negotiations between the two clubs start regarding the terms previously set out and when everyone is in general agreement the formal offer will be sent over to be scrutinised by the selling club's legal department.

There will be lots of other stuff going on like the buying club raising the necessary finance, legal departments going over the small print in contracts, medical records exchanging hands.

A modern transfer is so complicated its a miracle that so many go through every summer

I thought we would wait for Rodriguez so this is a little bit surprising, but actually I think there's a chance we will try to get both (after J-Rod has proved his fitness). With Lennon, Chadli, Townsend, and Holtby still around, it wouldn't really be that surprising to see two attackers let go in the near future.

I thought the way it worked is Levy has a wheelbarrow of cash and once we have them on a Ryanair flight it's a done deal?
