I think he’s fairly athletic, decent in the air, ok defending 1v1, has good ball control, good timing of attacking or overlapping runs, good at 1-2 passing and linking play.

Sure he’s no Cafu but I’m just saying played regularly in his best position he will probably look more like he did at wolves when he was regarded as one of the top 5 wing back/full backs in the league.

Ok you’re entitled to your opinion.

He was very good for a number of years at Wolves.

He may well not end up cutting it at Spurs but ultimately he’s so far been judged on a season where he was played out of position at RB, had joined a new club so needs time to settle in, he got injured early on and then he got covid and he was in and out of the team, mostly out so he didn’t get a chance to build up fitness or confidence with a run of games.

You are of course entitled to your opinion, and my honest view is he can’t possibly have always been as bad as he’s been for us so far so I believe his confidence is totally shot. But based on his Spurs performances I’ve got to disagree with a number of your comments:

Firstly the idea that RB and RWB are completely different positions is just wrong. Of course some people are better suited to the wing back role but that doesn’t justify looking like a pub footballer when asked to play in a back 4. Ok at 1:1s? Are we watching the same human turnstile who lost us the NLD a few months ago? And good timing overlapping? As I said, confidence is gone but he basically doesn’t do this at all, he turns inside and back 90% of the time. I’ll agree he is decent in the air (which should be more important as an RB than a RWB by the way).

I can’t see how he can turn it around, it’s been too awful. I hope he moves on and builds his confidence back up

On par with Tramezzani! Could definitely be one of those names mentioned when asked 'who is the worst Spurs player you've seen?!

Some players get settled once they get a decent contract and stop improving then get worse. At least he's HG so someone will take him.

When I saw this post before the game, I knew we were in for vintage Doherty. The guy is lazy, disinterested, and shit at football. We’ve made some stinky signings, but he’s the worst we’ve ever signed for me, and nothing anybody says will change my mind. Yesterday, he finally gets a chance in this system we’ve all been told he excels in, and he played like Phil Jones in a k-hole. I pray we bring in a right back, because Tanganga can’t do it all on his own with his injury history, and Doherty has none of the attributes required to be a professional footballer - how he has got this far will undoubtedly end up as a Hollywood film eventually.

I can’t see what you’re getting worked up about. I’ve seen the technique Doherty is using above used by top batsmen in cricket. Pre-match they visualise and go through playing their shots Against different balls. This is Doherty running through his repotoire of plays, focusing on I’m generally asleep when the ball is played to me, and I’m generally asleep when faced with a need to defend.

He is so heavy, lumbering and slow.

On top of that he is generally just terrible at everything. He is slow of mind too, not just body.

Sell NOW.

Wow lots of disagrees here, fair play didn't know the generally feeling was that he's completely not rated.

We've written off other players too soon and I think he could be another but then again if Tanganga plays like he did vs City again then he will be our 1st choice RB for a long time and MD won't get a game anytime soon anyway.

Nah not buying that. Wolves fans were happy to see him go, thought they'd mugged us, he was pure stat padding. There is no way he was actually ever a good footballer at Wolves, he just had some end product. They always said he's a pony defender, and pony physically and he's not even good technically. How can you watch him and say he's athletic? What are you seeing? He's one of the most unathletic players I've ever seen.

We bought a RB who can't defend or move or pass.
Tell us how you really feel about him ;)

I agree with people who disagree with my comment about him being athletic I can see why they think otherwise although i'm talking more about a good engine up and down rather than athletic in the way that say an Aurier or Tangana at RB are powerful that is different.

But I completely disagree about the fact you don't believe RB and RWB are completely different positions. I've played and coached both of those positions to a paid level and I can tell you there are very different. The way you defend in a 4 to a 5 is completely different, the area on the pitch you cover is different, the runs you make are different the passes you make are different the positions you take up on and off the ball are different.

Agree that his confidence is/was shot which is why i didn't want to write him off straight away and certainly wont judge him based on a ECL game away with a half strength and youth side playing on a dodgy pitch, but as I said if Tanganga keeps playing like he is and we stick with 4-3-3 then Doherty won't get a regular run of games at all so this conversation will be irrelevant.

Mabye if we get e.g. Tomyasu in who can cover RB and CB then sell Doherty and Tanganga stays 1st choice RB.

Course it is. It's between Winks, Sissoko, and Doherty, but Doherty takes it for me.
No it's not even close. Winks is technically a half decent footballer sometimes, he's just missing a lot of the mental sides of the game with confidence/aggression being the most obvious. Sissoko is physically exceptional even if he's technically limited. Doherty offers absolutely nothing physically or technically. He's a player I genuinely don't think would look much out of place in League 2, maybe even lower.

It’s a huge difference of writing a young player off while finding his feet or a signing from a European league who needs to get into PL rhythm than writing off a player who shows no signs of improvement or even managing basic skills in a league where he’s been playing for years.

Matt unfortunately does not belong in a team in the top half of the league and the more I see of him against opposition like yesterday, I wonder if he would even cut it in the championship.

One of our weakest ever signings in the PL era. Whoever “scouted” him needs to take a long look at themselves
