that had past me by. Are you sure?

Yeah they got hit by FFP last season.

They can't make a loss greater than 30 mill this year due to a FFP ruling.

Edit: I'm not sure how they are on that, but with covid-19 hitting income it's reasonable to assume they might have to raise funds somehow.

Very good player that would be a big upgrade in a problematic position for us. I couldn't give a toss what age he is as he could give us 4/5 years even at 28. People need to stop obsessing about young players and look at the quality of the player.

Some here have a dislike towards him - I dont see any reasonable reason being given for that.

Doherty is not a terrible defender like some make him out to be. We can given him the pseudo-wingback role by keeping Davies in back3 on possession and pushing Doherty right up the field.

Doherty in all competitions, since Wolves came back to PL has assisted 15 goals and scored 15 goals...

30 goal direct contribution in 2 season - thats awesome for a RB or RWB.

He will be a definite upgrade, on what we have. Only question of course is on if the deal can be done with Wolves.

He's not fashionable. He doesn't have a fancy foreign name, he isn't a player most have never seen play, he probably isn't the bollocks on Playstation.

A massive upgrade on Aurier going forward. A goal threat and excellent crosser. Not sure what he’d be like in a 442 but if we were to play him like we do Aurier it would be an instant improvement.

Unfortunately we’d Offer Aurier and a packet of crisps and they want more.

I like Doherty - it’s starting to become pretty clear Mourinho wants players in who will hit the ground running and get the job done.

Obviously does make me worry a little for our long term strategy, but fuck it - if we win something I don’t care.

It is all about the here and now for me. No more projects or waiting for youngsters to come good (they might not). He’s an upgrade in a position we need improving on. If it is true and possible to do a deal it would be a great signing. He’s the next best attacking right back in the division after TAA.

Im genuinely excited by this link. Sounds far too good to be true though.

I'm all for this providing the financials stack up.

Provides a much more reliable outlet down the right flank than Aurier.

Dude, we have people on here complaining about Kane and saying he should be sold.

No amount of complaint about any player or manager will ever surprise me.

I’ve not seen a single post where people have expressed any sort of dislike for him?

Between this and the Joe Hart thread it's amazing how people can turn a handful of posts which aren't positive into it seeming like there's widespread vitriol.

So as long as he's not a terrible defender he's good enough for us?
If we buy him I'll judge him on his performances but it would be remiss of me not to say I'm underwhelmed.

Given all the running a modern fullback has to do, it would seem like a very short termist move. In the Prem, most top FB's seem to be done by their early 30's. Ashley Cole was a spent force at 32, Glen Johnson at 29/30, Zabaleta 31, Baines 30 and Rose at 29. Obviously there are exceptions to every trend, but buying a FB who will soon be 29 seems like an odd move. At 29 you'd expect them to be moving to Serie A or West Ham. For example, look at the intensity of Andy Robertsons game, going up and down the flank, can you really see him keeping that up much past 30? You can't be a Sheringham at FB.

Jose has always bought finished article players rather than projects for the future. He wants to win now, not in 3 years, so this makes perfect sense to me.
Given Jose’s liking for one fullback to hold whilst the other pushes forward, Doherty fits that roll and has been pretty effective at Wolves for the last couple of years.
Whilst the fee might not be cheap, I can’t imagine the wages will be huge.
I like it as a deal, better than Aurier, PL experience and will slot straight into the first XI.
Only question is whether Wolves will deal with us considering they are probably looking at us as a direct rival after last season!

I think the concern over him being an issue defensively is definitely valid. It seems like he only really peaked when playing as a pure RWB.

As for the lopsided formation I felt like we dropped that towards the end of the season and were much better for it. Now Doherty might have the superior G/A output to make it worthwhile but I'm not totally sure on it.

Overall I think I'd welcome the signing but after Aurier I'd be quite keen on a steady hand at RB like Celik or Castagne. A more solid back 4 unit may allow us to play two 8s in front on Hojbjerg which should improve the quality of our football. That's just personal preference. I'd welcome the signing if we got Doherty and hope he proved everyone wrong defensively.
