Doherty would be such a brilliant signing even for his age. We'd still get a good 4 years out of him and he should be bang into his prime by now.

It all just depends on the price, which is why i doubt this will happen. Doherty is one of the best full backs in the league.

I like Doherty - it’s starting to become pretty clear Mourinho wants players in who will hit the ground running and get the job done.

Obviously does make me worry a little for our long term strategy, but fuck it - if we win something I don’t care.

Would love to see more of him in the Ireland team but he has Captain Coleman ahead, otherwise he’s one of our better players. Wouldn’t mind having him in the squad.

He’s very poor defensively, but he would provide quality in that de facto right winger role with a defensive left back (Davies/Tanganga) as per Jose’s preferred system. Much rather Arrons who’s probably be cheaper, and has a much higher ceiling

I'm not worried. Hoejbjerg is only 24 and a lot of others we've been linked to are no more than 28.

In regards to Doherty, I can see the appeal from an attacking aspect but I can't imagine Jose wants a FB who isn't as strong defensively, especially if he has reservations about Aarons.

Would make sense if we are going to use the asymmetrical full back principle again next season after ditching it towards the end of the season.

Fuck me, the thread's been open for three seconds and already we're pretending we don't know how ages work

I always rate Doherty when I see him but isn't he an attacking RWB? In which case can he cut it defensively in a back 4. Also as a Scottish player that would mean he isn't HG either.
Hg has nothing to do with where you’re born and all to do with which academy you came through for three years by the end of the season in which you turn 21. Wolves is the answer.

And he’s Irish not Scottish.

He’s fine defensively. Tough and concentrates. No silly bollocks.

See Eric Dier for Exhibit A.

Hojbjerg is a good age at 25 (just) so not worried about him.

If the rest of the signings we make are players like Hart (33) Doherty, Wilson (both will turn 29 this season) does make me think we’ll be in a situation in a couple seasons where they’ll be on big wages and we’ll struggle to sell them. (Apart from Joe Hart, who we’ll probably just release eventually)

But then again, as per my other post, I just want to win some silverware now - so I also think we should sign whoever José wants ?
