I would have found a spot for Scarlett on the bench yesterday - probably sacrifice one of the 3 midfielders (PEH?) on the basis that Porro could cover both RB and R Mid if required. Skipp was the only one from our academy yesterday (Austin joined us at 16 years old) - we really need to start bringing players thorugh the system better and giving them the chance prove themselves.

At one point yesteday Liverpool had 3 academy players on the pitch (TTA, Jones and Elliott)
Liverpool bought Elliot from Fulham when he was 16, I think he was 16 anyway

I'd say we are doing a lot to give players a chance to prove themselves - given how many went on tour and are training with the first team.

Ange, among all people, seems to be choosing his squad based on meritocracy - and nothing else.

In years gone by, almost EVERY fan will have some consensus views on a certain player not good enough and wanting to move them on. Same fan base also have some players they think need more chances in their correct position

But, over the years, new manager we get completely does the opposite, or gives a chance but in wrong positions, have favourites which is against consensus view.

Fans always used to have a view that manager isn't doing the obvious. At the same time, same fan base wants the manager to be unique in their ideas and want to see those changes straight away.

I will go & say, Ange is the first manager that to me has ticked all boxes in the first week of the job :

  1. Handled sensitive transfer of Kane well
  2. Implemented the system on game 1 of the preseason & game 1 of actual season without fuss
  3. Already improved players like Bissouma from last season. Fans always felt Conte misused Bissouma with not given a chance
  4. Under Jose & especially Conte, fans have to cry, beg , sing about new signings before they will be played their game 1 in October. Day 1 of new season, Ange gave debut to 4 players, first time since 2004.
  5. Squad trimming - most fans already know who is going to be trimmed. Again no nonsense
  6. When he speaks everything is to the point, has empathy towards fans...unlike Jose or Conte
  7. Firm decision maker - Romero incident day 1 simple example
  8. Most important player in XI plays only till he is actually contributing - even if its captain Son he was subbed at 70min - unthinkable in previous regime.
Goes without saying, I am absolutely on board with Ange as manager. Lets hope, he gets the bit of luck when required. Absolutely convinced we will be far better club end of 23/24 season

Fair point, but…

Vicario - only healthy GK
VdV - easily our best LCB - so not a tough call
Udogie - again, easily best at his position
Maddison - do you think any manager would have left him out?

All managers want to win, and they almost always pick a squad they think gives them the best chance to do so. Ange is not different than Mourinho or Conte in that regard. He picked the players who fit best into his system.

Conte could certainly have gone with Dier and Davies in an alternative reality

Well, in a way you are proving my point that what we fans see as obvious isnt obvious with most managers

Under Conte,
a) Bissouma got his first start in 5th game and by 10th game got his 2nd start last season
b) Spence never got his chance even as sub

Even Poch , didnt give proper staright up chances to GLC & Ndombele when they came on scene

VDV - Conte no way would have played him with just 3 training sessions
Udogie - again, more chances he prefers Davies.
Maddison - agree. Most would have started given his stature

Managers of past would have started 1 or atmost 2 not 4. As I said, its first time we fielded 4 debuts in one game since 2004 .

As you can probably tell from my username, im a Celtic fan. I was gutted to see Ange leave us. We had just gone through a huge failure of a season and the team was stale and the club felt separated from the fans. Ange was announced and no one thought 'YES!!!' we had our hearts set on Eddie Howe. Hell even our commentators were pissing themselves at the pronunciations of Postecoglu.
He arrived alone and got stuck in, but if most of us are honest, we didnt really expect much, pundits were saying he wouldnt last til christmas etc. He proved them all wrong, he is a no nonsense manager, the board (historically cheap) started to buy into his vision and backed him with funding and he brought the club back to the fans. In all my time supporting Celtic, i have never felt closer to the club than when Ange was Manager. He encouraged players to spend time together outside of the club to build chemistry and it worked.

He has a philosophy of never stopping during the game. You will see fast paced football, with quick throws/free kicks to catch the opponents off guard. Unfortunately, my English team has always been towards Arsenal (without any knowledge of the history between you both) but i really want Ange to continue proving people wrong. If he is backed and given time to implement his vision, you will be lifting trophies again..

If you have felt distanced from the club in recent times, i really believe that you wont feel that way much longer. Good luck this season guys/gals.

Your first post implied that Jose and Conte would never use 4 debutants on their first game which is partially true, however there are circumstances you’re not taking into account when you say that.

Bissouma - not fit enough (his own words) to make an immediate impact under Conte, and when he did he was a regular feature (starts and subs) until his injury which put a blunt on the rest of his season. When he was finally fit post injury, Conte was already sacked.

Spence - Never got a chance because he hadn’t shown anything to prove he deserved one, and he hasn’t proved anything since. Conte seems to be right in this regard.

Just two examples of the circumstances you’re overlooked but you need to take the whole picture into account.

Ange started 4 new players because we needed those 4 new players in the first team. VDV is miles ahead of anyone behind him bar Romero who starts next to him. Had we bought him under Jose for example, I’m 100% sure he would’ve debut given Mourinho was crying out for a CB, to be fair the team has been crying out for 2 new CB’s since we lost the Belgium’s. Lloris is on his way out, Vicario was always going to be his direct replacement. Udogie, again, is miles ahead of Reggy or Sess and Perisic has been moved higher up the pitch now. Maddison was nailed on to start, we’ve needed a playmaker for well over 4 years now. 4 new players that the team itself needed to start. Ange gets credit for a lot but this credit needs to be shared with the fact that it was inevitable.

Anyway, not a shot at you but this constant need to compare what we are doing now to what we did under previous managers is tedious and tiresome. We need to move on from those comparisons just like we need to move on from Kane. It’s a new era, let’s discuss Ange and Ange only without the needless comparisons. It’s completely unnecessary and just comes off as bitterness.

Interesting insight this, cheers mate. Welcome to the forum, hang about and we might cure you of that nasty looking Arsenal rash 👍

My comment was not about needless comparisons. That comparison was 1 point in a larger set of points on Ange.

Regardless of the situation Ange finds himself in, I do stick to those comparisons. I dont think, Conte or Jose makes all those changes AND changes the way we play. Its not a dig on them. Just pointing out the differences in how each manager go about it. Poch made the changes early but still took 6 months to get the players buying into what he wants. Incase of Ange, early indications are that squad & XI already fast track in how Ange wants to play

My apologies, I just responded on how your message came across initially but this gives a better perspective on it.

Either way, I too am very impressed with what Ange has done for the team and the club in general so far. I can’t imagine how awful things would be without that father, leadership demeanour he brings to the table. Let alone the on field improvements.

It’s truly an exciting time to be a Spurs
Fan again. Incredible given we’ve just lost our boyhood talisman.

Could it be a bit ‘He Who Dares Wins’ with Ange?

Although, we’ll need to come up with a better motto than that, sounds too Del Boy. 😉

Kane wanting to leave us and go to bayern maybe 50%.

Kane wanting to leave us 99%.

Anyway we've made a good start without him, hoping to get a win at home with an up for it crowd behind the team on saturday.
Basically what I was saying. He didn't really want to go abroad. Was prepared to see out his contract and open to a short extension so that spurs would get some money for him to keep his legacy with us intact

I was more coming from the angle that he'd rather have gone elsewhere than spend another 12 months with us and that was his overriding motivation. He wanted to leave spurs more than anything else and bayern was attractive enough, if not top choice.

I dont think doing us a favour was much of the thinking but all conjecture whichever way we feel about that really.
