Disagree actually. Davies has been excellent as a LCB - we'd be better off buying a LB to compete with Udogie.

Agree with this. I would be comfortable with keeping Davies as LCB cover, seeing how Sessegnon adapts and recovers from injury to provide cover at LB, and then review it all in the summer.

don't forget we also have Luka Vušković coming in in 2025. Does anyone have any idea how he's doing?
He's not playing mate. Was talk they would look at loaning him somewhere else this month but we'll see what happens.

Well Emerson would cover Porro not LB and Sessengon is likely seen as a LW or surplus to requirements so…
Emerson covers where he is needed this season which has more often been LB and CB than RB.

How does the above reply help your argument that you would prefer a 4th choice CB over a 2nd choice LB?

Moving forwards Ange will want Emerson to cover RB so Porro can get a rest, he’s only covered CB and LB due to necessity and other injuries.

As for your 2nd point it’s about the order we do things, if Ange likes Kelly and we can get him now let’s do it and then next season either we keep Davies as back-up to Udogie for Davies final year of his contract and as a 5th CB option and then the summer after that Davies leaves on a free and we sign a new back-up left back.

If we don’t take the Kelly opportunity this Jan then sure keep Davies as 4th CB, but I still think in summer that Ange will want to move Davies back to back-up LB and bring in a specialist 4th CB.

Lets see what happens…

Think you're right about Emerson. Maybe with Davies he's simply more suited to playing LCB in Ange's system now though?

I'd be happy either way I think. Davies back to LB cover and a new CB or new LB cover and Davies as the 4th CB.

With Davies injured it doesn't really matter whether his future next season lies at LCB or LB, but Kelly gives us an immediate option to rest or cover either VdV or Udogie during a game, because I don't think Sess is it and Reggie seemingly has offers elsewhere and isn't in any plans.
Succession planning and covering another defensive injury disaster for the now is joined up thinking.

Yep either fine by me as long as we succession plan Davies as he only has 1yr left on his deal come this summer that’s my main point :)

Not sure about this move. With such a strong group of CBs in Romero, VDV and Dragusin, I do wonder if Kelly would stop us being able to bring through someone like Dorrington.

Good problem to have really!

I'm totally with you on this. Having two reserve FBs who can do a respectable job at CB has proven very useful, and is good for keeping the squad involved.

I don't think we really need Kelly to be honest, and I'm not sure we need Gallagher either.

Totally. We’re not in the champions league, so realistically will only playing one game a week for most of the rest of the season. Loading the squad can cause problems because inevitably some players will be benched or even left out the squad all together. CB is also one of those positions where there is less rotation as it’s about building partnerships.

Personally I think with Davies as LCB cover and Sessgnon/Royal LB cover we should be good until the summer.

Under Postecoglu the "back up" role isn't necessarily about covering injured players it's about coming on around 60 minutes, that's the sort rotation Postecoglu does all the time with his substitutions all across the park so if Kelly comes in we'll see plenty of him even if he doesn't start.

I guess the question is more around if we can get the right player in Jan. Not so much whether we really need him this season. This guy is down to 6 months so not too expensive and homegrown. If he's essentially 4th best centre back it will be tough to get better. Or we can just keep Davies and hope one of Phillips of Dorrington replace him when his contract is up.

This is where I am with it. Essentially I don't think Kelly is much of upgrade on Davies. I believe it is better for squad harmony if we keep Davies as that fourth choice CB and 'provide a pathway' for Phillips/Dorrington/the Croatian kid we've signed from Hadjuk Split, to take that spot in a year or 18 months time.

He's def an upgrade when it comes to Pace. If we wanted someone to come in if VDV is out then Kelly is a great option

I don't think this is necessarily true of centre backs, they cover some of the least distance on the pitch.

I have never seen any manager ever regularly sub off his CBs on 60 minutes like they would a midfielder or forward that had gassed themselves out.
