They have agreed a new 3 year contract (three) with mata.

Apparently 140k+ per week for a dwindling bench player. He has been average at united since he signed and they pay for him to stay until he is 34. Madness beyond belief.

United just burning money atm.
What are they doing?
That makes absolutely no sense.
They cant be this stupid.
There must be something going on here. Some kind of dodgy scam or something. That cannot possibly be a footballing decision.
Same as Jones getting a new 5 yr deal.
Seriously wtf?

Honestly they are a sinking ship at the moment. You would have to be mad to join them.

I was talking to some united fans and I said I would only take rashford. They told me even he hasn't been that good.

Apparently some striker called Mason greenwood is the next big thing and lindelof has had a decent season.

Strangely they didn't want to talk much about football.

I suppose playing devil's advocate, they may be forced into resigning some of their older players.

I know that their fans want a complete overhaul of their playing squad, with 7, 8 or 9 players brought in, but that's not realistic.

Which means that there are going to be certain players that they'll need to keep, because after all they still need experienced bodies in the squad.

It's not ideal and this problem should have been headed off at the pass earlier, but they are where they are and have to come up with a viable plan going forward.

Another thing...

OGS will also need to earn his coaching pay-check, by making failing players good again. Despite all the excitement and fan transfer wish-lists, good coaching is where you really develop a squad and get results.

The good managers will spend money, certainly, but they'll also improve the players they have; players who may well have been failing in the previous regime(s).

EDIT: FYI United squad: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_United_F.C.#First-team_squad

I'd still take Martial; I reckon Poch could make him a player

And De Gea; 4 years younger than Lloris

Even though I love the Frenchman, I'm a ruthless manager ;)

They’re in a similar position Liverpool were pre Klopp.

Big club with a huge turnover. They have a number of players to sell.

They want to buy the best but the truly elite won’t join them.

So they need to get in good players , slightly under the radar, like Salah and Mane.

But be under no illusion; while cannot beat Barca, Real and City to signings they are a draw.

To be honest, signings aren't the main concern for them; as you say, they are still a draw and certainly have the resources to compete.

The main problem they have is no real cohesion or plan behind the scenes.

They need to put some experienced people in place to build a philosophy at the club, post-Fergie, with their academy and First team squad following suit.

The agree their issues go deeper than signings.

If OGS can get the best out of Martial consistently then that is one less signing to make.

But they won’t improve enough without a couple of good signings. Their squad just doesn’t look right.

A draw to who though? Off the top of my head De Ligt, Koulibaly, Chillieni have all turned them down in the last couple of years.

The reality of the situation is that Utd aren't in the Champions League nor do they have a manager with the kind of prestige who players want to play for so I don't see them attracting top tier talent.

Says it all when a player like Ander Herrera doesn't even want to extend his contract...tells you how far the club have fallen and their current standing.

I don't think giving Mata a new contract is a bad idea. They can certainly afford the wages so that isn't an issue. As @hellava_tough says they can't replace everyone this summer and Mata is a decent player who seems like a pretty good guy. I imagine having his influence around the club is pretty beneficial.

Is it just me or are United starting to become us a few years ago? They've changed their transfer policy from targeting superstars to focusing on buying young English players who can grow into the team to give you the fight and energy that you need alongside the bigger high profile names. They're obviously going to spend a lot more money than we did doing it, but it's going to be interesting to see how they progress.

That bit made me chuckle because Mark Goldbridge on The United Stand has been ranting and raving about people saying this regularly; he obviously disagrees

As for their transfer strategy, like you say, it'll be interesting to see what they do.

I get the impression that United have lots of resources, but lack the experienced personnel and overall strategy to get deals done.

I'm not sure their dealings in the last 3 or 4 seasons have been particularly good, but they've spent some serious wedge.

Really? What's he been saying about Mata?

Really? What's he been saying about Mata?

To start with, I totally understand why you're asking that question; I, like you, thought Mata was a decent enough experienced pro.

But Goldbridge, who admittedly watches United week-in/week-out, basically says he's been crap all season, usually starts on the bench and there's no proof to say he's good around the youngsters in the dressing-room.

He gets quite heated about it

Which leads me onto my next point...

If the United Stand and their members' comments are anything to go by, United fans are approx. 10 days away from a full-blown transfer related melt-down!!!

They think they're taking too long with their business, they're not identifying the right players and they want at least 6 signings in!

Good luck lads (y)

Just to add to my post above, Goldbridge was also gutted that they gave Phil Jones and Chris Smalling contract extensions
