It goes further than that. Ashley gambled that Newcastle would comfortably be able to retain their PL status whilst he made serious money out of player trading. Since Newcastle's better players aren't expecting to be at the club for more than a couple of seasons, there's never going to be any chance of establishing a strong core to the squad. (Now that they're facing almost certain relegation, and as the players' contracts don't include any relegation clauses, Ashley's gamble is looking particularly reckless.)

You could argue other clubs like Stoke have built up a "stepping stone" model, but haven't failed as fantastically as Newcastle.

You're right, of course, but Newcastle just seem to have gone too far with this approach, whereas the core of the Stoke team seems to have survived.

As role models go, they've had even worse ones in the past. Remember Freddie Shepherd when he was their chairman? As the Guardian website explains,

I know that Daniel Levy isn't to everyone's tastes but it's stories like this that make me realise how fortunate we've been.

Something strange there. They've been lashing money out but continue to be absolutely crap! In particular they spent a bundle on Florian Thauvin in the summer but he ended up been sent off on loan in January. Really really unusual.

They dumped Ben Arfa who promptly started playing out of his skin for Nice. I wonder did their treatment of Gutierrez upset a lot of people there?
