Lamela really looks like he completely missed the joke in that pic. Quite a big statement from Argentina and Adidas (to be fair he does represent them tho) to put him amongst that lot.

I have a Roma fan who plays on my Sunday league team who takes the piss out of me every time we don't play Lamela and play like shit. I never know what to say to him, Lamela is now even a poster boy for Argentina and still can't get in our team, I doubt he would struggle to get in any of teams above us except for Chelsea.

He's made just 4 league appearances since he joined, all as sub.

1. Arsenal - On as 75th min sub
2. Norwich - On as 83rd min sub
3. Cardiff - On as 73rd min sub
4. Chelsea - Didn't play
5. West Ham - 63rd min sub
6. Aston Villa - Didn't play
7. Hull - Didn't play
8. Everton - Didn't play
9. Newcastle - Didn't play

He's had a total of 66 mins of premier league action since he joined us.

I would have liked to have seen a lot more of him before I decided he was 'poor' or couldn't help the team.

He was by all accounts the best player against Sheriff recently but still didn't get on the pitch against Newcastle so I don't know why you've said he was poor whenever he played. Simply not true.
Read the rest of my comments. I never once said he was poor in the Sherriff match. I said he had shown nothing to suggest he was worthy a start up until then.

One assist against a the tiring defence of a newly promoted team hardly warrants a start above Townsend IMO

0 assists and one fluky goal hardly warrants a run of 9 games either imo.
Our opinions on form differ, that bit is clear.
We just going round in circles.
I respect your opinion.
Ultimately its AVB who makes the decisions and we will just have to wait and see

How do you know it's not true? I just heard that exact stat in a video from Trans World Sport, which profiled the boy when he was 12 and it was actually "over 120 goals." Maybe this video hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread, or even anywhere in SC, but here it is anyway. GO TO 0.49

Sorry, but it's still a lie. Maybe it's his total amount of goal in all the years as a youth at River, but certainly not in a season. It would've reached the news here, and it didn't. There's a player nowadays at River (Federico Andrada), who has the same age than Erik when he left, that holds the record for youth goals in all the seasons, he's a striker, and he never even scored 60 goals in a season. Plus Erik was not a starter in the youth sides until he was 16.

Lamela will be playing today against Ecuador in NY. I think he will start, but it's not confirmed yet.

Plus, Argentina presented a new kit, and he's one of the players showing it, so I guess there's a good chance of him being in the next WC

I wouldn't be remotely surprised if Lamela started on the right tonight, given that he was excellent in Argentina's last match against Uruguay.

If he's good enough to start for Argentina, why isn't he good enough to start for Spurs? Andre needs to insert him in the line-up against City and United. Waiting until December, when we're in 8th place in the table and devoid of ideas going forward, is too late.

It's crazy when you see the guys he's playing with, and he can't get off our bench when we're unable to score a goal from open play for 3 game straight. It's madness.

Why do Argentina even bother with a new kit?

Also, Lamela should start, he's quality and we need his creativity and goals. Bring Townsend on against tiring legs

Interesting. Okay, well, we've all heard of human error before. The Trans World Sports producer must have just got it wrong...

It's a pretty good stat to get wrong, especially when it goes the positive way all the way to being "120 in one season", I'm sure Lamela would take that if he heard it.

And for all of those better performances leading to starting every game, he still has as many premier league assists as Lamela does.

Apart from that one assist against a tired relegation struggling defence what else has he done before the Sheriff match?

Townsend has made a positive contribution to most matches up until recently. In fact, the whole reason he got his chance was because of a MOM performance in a Europa league match where he scored and created a further 2 - Lamela was struggling to even perform in those games!

He is in a new country with no friends, can't speak the language, in a league which is the polar opposite to serie A. It will take time for him to adjust.

To try and claim before the Sheriff match that he deserved to be in the team ahead of Townsend on merit is absolute bullshit. If you actually watched the performances rather than reel off a useless stat you will have seen Townsend set up plenty of chances for team mates that weren't converted. Put opposition defences on the back foot due to his direct running, gave us attacking impetus and was generally our most threatening player.

Lamela on the other hand has looked lost in most matches. Has dallied on the ball too long and been dispossessed easily. Misplaced simple passes to team mates, looked scared to dribble with the ball and has been going to ground far too easily.

Players should be in the team on merit like when Townsend proved his worth in the Europa league. We all want Lamela to do well but he has to earn his place and up until the Sheriff match he hadn't done that.

Eriksen got injured on international duty and will be out for a few weeks, this could signal a chance for more game time for Lamela in coming matches

The point is his positive contributions haven't amounted to anything. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expect different results. It is a matter of meritocracy as a whole, not just on an individual players basis. The team hasn't performed well, so change the parts. Townsend has not produced any goals, nor any assists, so it is past time we tried something else.

The cardiff goal was created out of Quick passing and guile between Lamela and Holtby.
Appreciate the goal, stop making excuses for it.
Townsends goals came against a piss poor EL crap who let him him run the whole length of the pitch.
Classic counter attack football which we dont get in the PL.
Yes Townsend got his chance and played quite well, without actually doing alot in terms of assist and goals.
But he has not being playing that good lately.

A positive contribution can't always be quantified. Like when many people on here used to claim Modric wasn't that great because he didn't score many goals or provide many assists.

I look at the overall performance and IMO it is only very recently that Townsends contribution has waned.
