Here's a potential scenario to consider has unfolded today:

1. We're prioritising Homegrown players like @Trix said, so we look to bring in two HG players. Also currently for the team, without any unexpected outgoings, our biggest requirements are a CB and a WF.

2. Since its only a backup role, we decide to get one HG player at CB and thus we target Tosin and when that looks unlikely we go back to our buddies CAA and come up with Lloyd Kelly to cover our ass's. (Not great planning, but not the worst outcome due to us being in a pinch)

3. For the WF role, despite him not being the number 1 target on the list, we decide that Brennan Johnson is the best signing due to him being able to rectify our homegrown issues.

4. As the day goes on we struggle to make any progress in signing Brennan Johnson, and Forest don't seem to be relenting on their price.

5. Unexpectedly talks reopen on a potential Hojberg sale, whether it be with Utd, Fulham or Atletico. Thus our biggest requirements potentially change to being a CB, WF and a new CM.

6. This turn of events brings Conor Gallagher back onto the table for us, another player who's Homegrown.

7. While the club struggles to negotiate the fee for Brennan Johnson down from £50m, the club learns that Brentford have agreed a fee of €40m for Johan Bakayoko. (A player who we were linked to, who could potentially have been above Brennan Johnson on our desired list but just wasn't homegrown)

8. We start to see a new ideal scenario for the club that we didn't think was an option at the start of the day, and we pivot from trying to sign Lloyd Kelly and Brennan Johnson to trying to sign Lloyd Kelly and Conor Gallagher for the HG spots which frees us up to target the non-HG Johan Bakayoko for the WF role.

9. We contact Bakayoko and inform him of our interest, and shortly after he rejects the Brentford offer in hopes of signing for us instead.

10. There's back-of-house info shared about the Bakayoko interest which prompts @Rob to open up this thread relatively unprompted.

I'm probably a million miles off on every single point made here, but at the same time I don't think it's completely out of the realms of possibility.

Edit: And just to add to this, I'm not getting one bit excited about this because even if I'm right, I have little to no confidence of us actually pulling it off.

Was talking to my Ajax mate about him tonight. Said he looks a talent but still incredibly raw. He was surprised teams were already willing to pay €40 mil for him. In his opinion he needs at least another season before moving. From what I’ve seen i 100% agree with him. Looks a prospect but very very raw.

Let’s let Ange cook him then 😂

I’d feel so much better if we were in for this guy. We so so badly need a winger with some “circuit breaking” ability as Ange calls it. Son gets the ball, takes a couple touches and refuses to take on his man and cuts back inside into a congested area that the CM’s and inverted fullbacks are in. Kulusevski gets the ball and takes a couple touches and cuts back inside and does the same thing. Where is the circuit breaking here? They are the circuit and it’s absolutely predictable unless Sonny wraps a screamer in once in a blue moon. This guy is the kind of player we need and I’d feel so much more optimistic if we got him or someone like him. Who cares if he’s raw and needs developing? At least he’s the right kind of player and can work over time

I agree with you. But maybe it's just me, but I've been resigned to a transitional season to build on. In my thinking I was hoping to target the next wave of talent. When I looked into him and Gift Orban, I said sign me up. Bed them in behind Richy and Kulu and hope for the best. I get some of the raw signings don't work out but they're exciting

By which point he will cost how much?

I’m not saying I’m against him and I agree about the transition. I think there is just a little air of desperation that is causing us all to cling to the idea of anyone remotely exciting even if maybe logically it’s not the best move. €40 mil for him would be a crazy gamble imo but then again I think £50 mil on Johnson is crazy as well. Fact is it shouldn’t have gotten to this point in the first place. I know that isn’t helpful but if one just takes a step back and realise our only two realistic options for attacking reinforcements after selling Kane weeks ago are Johnson and Bakayoko then something is very very wrong imo.

Kudu went for €40 mil this window, Gakpo went for €42 mil last Jan…

Bakayoko has literally only played 28 league games for them. He’s significantly behind the aforementioned two in his development. Doesn’t mean he won’t one day be better but it’s very early in his development.

I mean his finishing looks amazing on the video posted. Top and bottom corners with pace. Defending is a bit crap but he knows where the goal is and looks pretty quick. Like mentioned if we could get holberg out and Gallagher in that’s a plus on hg. Then go for him instead on Johnston. That’s a plan tho. We don’t do planning.

He is raw but we need to try and get a super talent for the attacking positions who offers us the skills we currently lack. He has the explosiveness and dribbling ability that Son and Deki just don’t have.

Udogie and Sarr were raw talents and I think we need 1 like that in attack. I do agree it’s a bit more money than we’d ideally pay but with his skillset he could potentially explode.

I mentioned him a couple of weeks ago. Raw but has loads of potential. If we dont take a chance now I feel like he will go to a bigger club in 12 months.

Does he have more potential than the last forward we bought from PSV, Steven Bergwijn?

Yes as he has more to his game. He is brilliant at dribbling, is quicker and has a better cross on him. Stevie was a more direct forward whereas Bakayoko is similar to Doku in that he is a more traditional 1vs1 winger.
