Surprised this is the case - they don’t have a league game until mid January then he’s suspended for 3 games after that?

I wonder if Nice have someone lined up whose club won't sell until mid-January for whatever reason - so if Todibo moves before then, they'd be short. That, or if they sell first, whoever they're buying will have their price ratcheted up accordingly.

Otherwise, as noted, the United match could be a factor.

I believe he can’t play until the 27th Jan due to suspension (unless they have games that need to be scheduled which currently aren’t) so I don’t really get why we need to wait for him. Accounts are all July-June too so not FFP related.

deals take time to broker out i have to imagine, especially when we are talking about 30mil+ deals, that isn't chump change, plus a lot of times they need to sort out a replacement which they don't want the selling club on that end know that they have a windfall of 30mil+ coming in. Plus player has to sort out deal with new club, most likely talk to the manager, see what their plan is and all of this is going on while the team is playing matches unnlike during the summer window for the most part.

Look, I love when deals get done super quick, but I also realize that we need to also understand that if we came in with the exact number they want on the first try, they will know they could squeeze more out of it.
Cheers.

Maybe someone who’ll be involved in AFCON?

Whilst I mostly agree everyone knew from the moment the window closed that injury or suspension at cb could cost us dearly, it’s not a hindsight situation

I don't think anyone in SC would have seen straight reds for Bissouma and Romero, or Bentancur getting sliced open on his return to first team action, Micky pulling up lame, and Madders getting a length injury all within a calendar month?

Did i mention Udogie?

No team can take into account that run of luck whether self inflicted or not.

Needing to strengthen the squad was always going to be Ange's main aim, he said himself that the squad he wanted to play in the system hw wanted to implement would always take two or three transfer windows.

A single injury short or long term or a suspension or two is inevitable, but no account can be made for the run we have had.

Thank you for sharing this info. If they are stalling with no rationale we should move on.
We sold Sanchez without a replacement at the end of the last window, lost VDV Nov 6th to a long term injury and Romero came off against Everton with a hamstring worry. We have dropped 14 points in a period our CB pairing were missing, availability and due dilligence on new recruits should have been done long ago.
As good as Porro has turned out we had 3 other right backs during that saga last January, we do not have that luxury this season. If a deal cant be done early, move on.

What occurred for the to me about the delay was a sell-on clause or performance or loyalty bonus expiring or reducing as Nice got him quite cheaply from Barcelona (€8m) and then he signed again

But checking transfer market he signed for Nice on 1 Jul 2021 and then renewed in Nov 22 so it seems unlikely that there's any diff

I would go with the availability of Nice's target replacement

It could be that we may have someone else we are working on higher up the list and if that doesn't work out, we move onto Todibo then.

Even with one injury we're notably weaker and we all said we needed a CB. Davies has done ok last few games but let's be honest he's not reliable in the longer term.

CB should have been signed so no we weren't relying on Eric Dier to play in a system that exploits almost all of the weaknesses he has.

There is no doubt that we just need to pay up for this guy. We are gonna seriously struggle if we don’t.

If we cant get him in within the first week then we really have no choice but to move on to our next CB target. With Romero out we just need somebody in asap.

Well the info we have had has said Ange wants bodies in early, so this development with Romero only underlines that need. I suspect we’ll move on and sign Dragusin now if Todibo can’t happen almost immediately.

Yep, needs to be signed imminently with the Romero news. If not possible, move on.
Find it hard to agree, if hes the one the club actually believe in then our 2 league games in Jan are 14th & 31st with fa cup on 5th. Why sign someone who isn't as good as Todibo just so that player is here for likely 1 league game sooner. We can't make such a short term decision, if Todibo is the choice then we need to stick with that if we believe he's a better fit from Feb onwards

I know exactly what you mean, but January provides any new player the opportunity to get up to speed with the rest of the team in order to give them the best possible start for the rest of the season. The break is perfect for players to acclimatise to a new country as well as what Ange demands from them on the pitch. Get it right and it could be invaluable.

I wonder whether Nice would be interested in taking Hugo as part of any deal? No idea what they’re like as a club from a goalkeeping perspective.

They will have us by the balls now, clubs will know we are desperate for a CB and will add a few million on.
