I agree with your general point here but I wouldn't use City as too much of an example. Firstly they are a cheat code with their infinite money. Secondly they often play 3 CBs in their starting line up (Dias CB, Gvardiol or Ake LB, Stones and Stones/Akanji CB pushing up in to midfield). Sometimes they even play 4 CBs! So it's obviously very easy for them to give loads of game time to multiple CBs.

Where as with us, we only start 2 CBs.

True, but for example, if Udogie was to get injured VDV has played a lot of games at LB so he could shift over if needed.

…and Romero is a walking red card 🤣so Todibo would still get plenty of games

After the Chelsea match there was an analysis going around that showed that Romero has consistently missed 30-40% of matches throughout his career due to injury or suspension, and VdV's hamstring issue is not new and may well prove to be a recurring issue, as hamstrings often are.

If we bring in a third starting-quality CB who can play on either side, that player will get loads of matches, especially once we're back in Europe and need to rotate more regularly.

Surely the same sort of fee that we paid for the likes of Porro, VdV, and Johnson would be a worthwhile expenditure.
It would be to me, but its not my money and I am somewhat reluctant to believe the club would sanction a big money buy in January

I would love to be wrong just don't see us spending north of £35mil on a player not guaranteed to play in the first 11.

To be fair, we spent a large amount on Sanchez when we had Vertonghen and Alderweirald. £35m by todays standards isn't the largest of outlays tbh.

Hopefully with Europe next season, we'll need options at CB and suspect Romero/VDV and if Todibo were to arrive would receive enough game time especially bearing in mind Romero's disciplinary issues.

I agree with most of your point, I just don't see us spending that much on a CB after spending reasonably big on VDV. I personally see the club looking at Kelly and Tosin as they are reasonably priced and homegrown
No chance Kelly is sold for less then £30mil mid season. Tosin has been excellent and Fulham want to sign him long term. The 'easy' homegrown options aren't as simple or cheap as you think.

Lange off to a belter if he can get this sorted and early. Remember how efficient he was at Villa the last couple of seasons, hoping for the same

This is the thing that does give me some confidence on this one.

No-one thought Villa would be able to get Diaby, Bailey or Boubacar Kamara, all of whom are in that same bracket of known quality outside of the mega-clubs.

You'd hope he could continue that kind of work with us. Or at least a combination of him and Don Fabio lurking in the shadows...

They can rotate suspensions as they both like a hard tackle

I get what you're saying about having VdV cover Udogie but I don't think it would work for us like it does Scum etc.

Our inverted FBs almost play like attacking mids and play so much on the half turn. I'm not sure how feasible it is to have the likes of VdV, Todibo etc cover those positions with their builds.

Unless we're truly skint, which as one of the ten richest clubs in world football I refuse to believe we are, I can't see why we wouldn't. We paid around £40m for Porro last January, and clearly CB is as big of a need this season as RB was this time a year ago.

It would be one thing if Ange were asking for a player that would shatter the club-record fee, but the prices being quoted for Todibo are in line with what we've paid for multiple similarly-rated players over the last two windows.

It's true enough that there are cheaper options around, but we need a player of the same level as VdV and Romero, not just squad-filler.

£35million, by todays standards is not viewed as a particularly large signing. But, to give it context it would be in the top 10 of our most expensive ever.
Would I like us to spend it? yes
Do I think we will? I don't know

We are obviously not skint, however, there are likely budgets and whether there is scope in the budget to sign this guy, or someone cheaper, only the club know that.

The early indications are that we’re willing to meet Nice's valuation. Rob Guest reported earlier this week that we'd made an initial overture at £35m, and now we're getting ITK and reports from Romano linking us to the player. It looks like our interest is serious and I don't think it would be if we were put off by their valuation.

This is where I am.

I 100% think we should sign him, but the fact we are not in Europe (meaning less matches for rotation), CB is one of the least rotated positions in the team, and Nice are currently in a title race, makes me dubious it will actually happen.

How many times...buying doesn't mean paying all the fee now so irrelevant.
How many times?
Bit passive aggressive for an opinion.

I suppose I could just simply counter that by saying I guess we can just sign 7 new players, all at £35million because buying doesn't mean paying all the fee now so irrelevant.

In reality though none of us know how much the deal would be, how much is payable up front, the agents cut, signing bonuses, lawyer fees etc etc. There are many factors to any financial deal we do which in my very humble opinion make this relevant.

Yes, they are the indications. It would be great to sign the player. I merely offered my opinion based on many years of supporting Spurs, and seeing an exceedingly long list of players strongly linked to us not come to fruition. Plenty of times, they have not come to fruition due to financial reasons.

Was speaking to my client who has played against him.

Said he is incredibly talented and a very strong defender. Would suit the PL.

The only issue is he said he gets suspended for silly things like picking cards up for dissent and overly strong tackles.

He is suspended tonight where he was supposed to be playing against my client 🤣🤣

So he may be one that we would need patience with

Todibo and Romero when they see each other in training on day 1

We bought Porro last Jan for a similar fee, so who knows. It’s possible that we will try to manage with what we’ve got… but we had two right back last January and terminated the contract of Doherty to essentially make room for Porro.

I think generally if the club thinks there’s value in a deal they do it regardless of timing. It would have been better for example to have signed another CB in August but probably the club couldn’t find the value they were looking for in a deal at that point. Jan is renowned for being a more difficult market than the summer but it seems like sometimes deals become available.

Would be very impressed if we could nail this down in early January.
